For all the R100GSers the taller 5th gear is worth the trouble. I just test road and what a nice difference. I now keep up with traffic (68mph) and stay under 4krpm. I will be checking MPG in the next week or so.:D

Cool! I'll be waiting for a report.
What is your current gas mileage?

On most boards I look at a friend of a friend has one.
I would like some more first hand information.

As far as mileage I think I was getting about 33, then I rebuilt the carbs with the dual float conversion and was up to 34-35, and now I'm hoping for close to 40. In reality if I get 5% better that would be good.

The gear is actually quite interesting. It has one less tooth than the stock one, the diameter is the same and the teeth still mess with all the other gears, giving about a 7% drop in rpms.

Out here I had to always drive the slow lane to keep from reving so high, now I can cruise at a safer speed without running the high r's. I still have plenty-o-power.

I lucked out and got the gear for under $200. Just one gear that changes. I think I got the last one. Other quotes were around $250 for the gear very hard to locate, and the Clymer manual does a great job covering the process. One change I would recomend is to use a hair dryer to heat the case for disassembly and re-assembly, and some plastic wedges to separate them.

38 to 41 MPG so far. Just so much more drivable now. No more screming down the road.

Does it reqiure any especial tools to remove/ install? Hydraulic press? Also ,are you running the re-jet kit recommended by the Bing Agency for the R100s' with carb #357/358. I guess cause we run too lean as is.( just put it in last week)

You do need a couple special tools to make the job easy. A proper puller for the output (driveshaft) flange, and a bearing puller to remove the bearing (front of output shaft) and put the gear on the shaft. I just carefully tapped the new bearing back on. Deffinately, you will want a good heat gun for expanding the cases to open it up.

The Clymer book is a great place to start, maybe you can find a copy at the local libary.

I'm looking for a final drive gear from an 1100 to put into my late '99 (August) GS1150 to raise the gear ratios a bit. I loved the first gear on my Adventure, but the bike was too tall. The intermediate shaft for that gear is a $900 item, and so the easiest, close-fix seems to be switching the final drive. Is there anyone out there who has one for sale and who knows about the conversion? Any special problems that pop up?:dunno [B[final drive gear [B]

I know magwa swapped the final drive on his RS. Wouldn't it be pretty much the same on a GS?
