F650 GS speedo/odommeter

I have a 2001 F650GS and the odommeter doesn't always keep the miles that i have driven
the speedo works fine and shows miles that i have driven but when i shut the bike off and restart it doesn't always keep the mile that i have ridden but the trip one works fine.
any ideals what could be the problem?

Make sure your battery connections are TIGHT. Loose battery connections are not uncommon and will cause all sort of weird electrical problems.
