The bike had a bad patch weld on one of the bosses - I wired everything up knowing that someday the boss would break and alas it broke.

Should I get a new transmission cover or have my local machine shop fab up a new boss and weld it on- If I repair the original do I need to get it out or can I access it with the rear wheel and swing arm off?

Any thoughts would be helpful.

Thanks

You can have the boss welded back on or built up with weld. Pull the gearbox and cover and get an estimate for welding it up, then decide whether to repair or replace the cover.

These bosses break because the pivot pin has lost it's clip, allowing the pin to slide through the lever until it is only supported on one end. The next time the lever is pulled, the boss breaks. You can replace the pin and clip with the one made for the 1980 bikes, which uses a better clip and a flange at the other end.

If we're thinking of the same thing, I've heard that you can just put a similar sized bolt in it's place, that way it wont be able to slide down and snap the piece.
