View Full Version : Where did you get that nick-name?

JetDoc

Didja ever wonder where all the cool (and unusual) nick-names come from? Here's your chance to explain...

Mine's easy... JetDoc is an aircraft mechanic (now retired). I spent quite a few years doctoring sick jet engines.

Mine is beer related. Do a quick Google search for "gambrinus" and you'll get more info than you ever wanted..

There were a few guys floating around at college with my same name and since I was working pt time at the local microbrewery (Penn Brewery in Pittsburgh) I had the great nickname of "BEER"

When I moved to Silicon Valley to work for AOL/Netcape a few years ago, I had to come up with a new AOL screen name to replace my old Canadian AOL screen name. I was using Netscape's Bugzilla (name derived from the Mozilla web browser) at the time to fix bugs on the project I was working on.

So I came up with Burnszilla. My last name Burns+zilla.

Since my December layoff, the AOL Burnszilla screen name has been retired, but I own the domain name. A brand has been born.

Ah, so your name is Junior? ;)

Mine is a combination of my job and my name.

People pay me money to look ahead and tell them what I see, and what I think they should do about it. :dunno

And my name is Ian.

I was invited to help a long time friend navigate an extended trip to Isle Royal, Lake Superior. It was a trip to entertain two of his clients/friends. It is a boat too large for only one experienced hand on that kind of voyage. I was to be the fore deck monkey and to fill in for his shaky navigation skills.

During an after dinner conversation one of the guests asked what kind of yacht I owned. When I replied that it is a 16' aluminum runabout, I was immediately, and thereafter dubed the "Tin Boat Captain".

It is on my birth certificate and driver's license...

Plus it is unique enough that it is usually always available. But please call me Brad.

kbasa

Well, back in the old days, my family name was actually Swiderski, a nice Polish name.

The Yankee Beemers found that out and started calling me Polska, kielbasa, you name it. Then, I sold my Rbike and bought a Kbike. The newsletter editor promptly dubbed me and Tina Team KBasa and the nickname stuck. I'm Kbasa and she's MrsKbasa.

So, there ya go.

Usedtopilot
08-18-2004, 08:15 PM
My nickname is pretty straightforward... I used to pilot Cessna 150s/172s years ago. My parents wouldn't pay for my lessons (I was only 16 at the time). Dad said, "I'm not paying for lessons - get a job if you can and we'll see what happens!"... thinking I surely would just let the dream die.

No... no.. I got a job a Hardee's for a year and a half and paid for my flying lessons. Many stories to tell there. Thus... Usedtopilot. When I win the lottery I'll fly again. Motorcycling is flying on the road....pure joy.

I've had other nicknames, though. Jeeg. Stick. Juju. Some I can't repeat.

I picked mine up from when I used to ride bicycles with a small group. I would usually go off on my own and explore different places, and always join back up with them at the strangest times. Someone said, "You float in and out like a ghost" When I transfered, or grew up and started using bicycles with motors I just kind of kept it. :brow

By night, the wee hours of the morning, and during normal (read: L-O-N-G) work days, I fly a corporate jet (CE-650) for a large fractional / charter firm. Days off are spent wrenching (1980 R100S, 1966 replica 427 S/C Shelby Cobra roadster) and doing my best to contribute to global warming. The amount of fun we have IS directly proportional to the amount of petro-carbons we consume.

There's also an X-rated reason.:lol

I guess mine's pretty obvious. I love the Foo Fighters. My family and friends know where to find me when the band tours-at the front stage barricade rocking out (and getting crushed). I have gone as far as Las Vegas to see a show, and would think nothing of going overseas to take in some performances if given the opportunity. I don't know what it is about the Foos....I think Dave Grohl and I were brothers separated at birth, although my mom assures me I was her first and last! I have always had alot of respect for Dave in that he found the strength and courage to carry on with his musical talent and dreams after Kurt Cobain put an abrupt end to Nirvana in 1994.

Dear Dawgmiester,
I hate to be the one to have to tell you this but you are spelling your nickname wrong if it was indeed crafted after the popular
liqueur "Jagermeister". Jager (hunter) Meister (master, expert etc.) as in Braumeister (master brewer) Meisterbrau (master brew)
or eubung mach de meister (exercise makes perfect)

As I remember, it was while I was a minority at Notre Dame (Southern WASP) back in the 70's. A old roomate, who's father was a FBI agent, recommended that I buy a priests collar at the bookstore because "the police won't bother some longhaired guy in a priest collar" Seemed a good idea, so I did it. Needed to give one good cover in those Nixon years.

During one of my "furloughs" back in Chapel Hill, I wore the collar and the nickname somehow appeared. I have since been asked to marry bikers, preach sermons, and save souls after too long at the beer tent. The true miracle in this story is the collar itself. I bought that shirt, a "Friar Tuck" brand, short-sleved, black priests collar shirt out of the ND bookstore in 1974. Somehow, after all the moves and parties and rallies during those 30 years and all the pounds that have added in that time; the shirt still is with me and still fits me!!! :rofl

I always that you were a member of the BFC. This now makes much more sense to have you as a bartender.

Next time you are up at ND, feel free to stop by...

Well, the first airline I worked for was just barely hanging on as I hired in about six months after it had filed Ch 11. We were working on the jets in this old hanger in Conroe, TX with no chance at customer contact (or much of anyone else). I let my hair grow along with my beard, I resembled Animal on the Muppet Show, I also played up the part and the name stuck for the next six years. That was more that fifteen years ago and a wife and two kids. The airline industry being what it is, I've now found a MUCH more stable hanger to hang out in, hence the SWA. Oh yea, and my hair is kept alot shorter.

When I joined adv.rider two years ago, I wanted to use the name Lone Rider, to reflect my habit of very early morning starts and therefore riding alone (nobody else is crazy enough to join me so early!)

That name was taken so I used "Lonesome Rider", which has been shortened over time to L Rider or even LR.

I really hated flying when I first had to travel by air for my job. I went to the doctor and asked for something to help me relax a bit. What the pharmacist filled was lorazepam. When the guys I worked with found out about them, they started calling me lorazepam. I no longer need it to travel by air, but the name has traveled with me online.

cruisin

I had owned my cruiser for about 4 months when I met a fellow cruiser rider who told me about the original BMW cruiser web site then owned by John Otsuki. I did not own a computer at the time so was using my friend's. When the I went to register a username, it only seemed natural to use 'cruisin' because it fit with my two favorite hobbies; cruisin on my R1200C and sailing my Catalina 22.

Mine comes from the early 70's when I needed a CB Handle.
Went into the garage looked at the helmet hanging from the bike, it was empty. The dog had it's way with the helmet, chewed out the lining.
So MT Helmet was born. When you use it on the CB, well you get the idea.

Now as an old F--T, I think it fits again.:bliss :clap

As Popeye says; "I yam whats I yam"

I've been turning wrenches for over 40 years and I have always had an old vehicle in a various stages of repair or restoration in my garage. I pride myself in my ability to identify most vintage vehicle makes, models, and years on sight.

While in high school and afterwards for a few years, I worked in an auto parts store and I was the old car specialist - meaning I was the one they came to when the books didn't go back that far to come up with part numbers or interchange.

My interest of the last dozen or so years has been focused on antique GMC trucks between 50 and 100 years old.http://www.oldgmctrucks.com/smilies/shifter.gif :thumb
