Howdy, is there a solid state component made that replaces the points or are the standard points as good as it get's on an 84? Thanks much.

84 R100 should have come stock with Electronic Ignition. No points.
If a previous owner has swapped in points, I have no idea why. :scratch The stock Bosch electronic ignition works just fine.

You can probably find a good used setup on fleabay or at one of the companies that part out used bikes.

I concur. Standard electronic ignition started in '81 models.
However, the canister points system used in '79 and '80 models is very reliable, good for over 20k miles if properly installed and maintained. If you have that system I wouldn't waste the money to buy another electronic setup as the points system will work just fine. It also has the advantage of not leaving you on the side of the road with no options as can happen when electronic systems fail. If you keep a set of points and condenser in the tool tray you can always get going again with a roadside repair. Also, points systems don't usually fail suddenly. The symptoms of a worn ignition begin with hard starting and poor idling/acceleration. You'll know far in advance that it's time for a tuneup. Remember the airhead motto: "Simple by Choice.":thumb
