So my main throttle cable was frayed and ready to go. I changed it out along with the two lower (throttle body) cables, and now my fast idle barely engages. I did not even touch the choke cable. I put it together, then took it back apart thinking something came undone, but no. Anyone know how that darn thing works. I here it is a common mistake home mechanics make, but the manual says absolutley nothing about how it works at the junction box. It's driving me nuckin futs. Appreciate any help.

Your lower throttle cables have too much slack. The fast idle is simply taking up the slack, instead of opening the butterflies. Start on the left side. Turn your cable adjuster to the right until the stop screw is being held off the stop. You can tell when it is off the stop because you will not hear the metallic "snap" on that side when you roll the throttle shut. Now, turn your adjuster half a turn to the left. Roll the throttle on and off and listen for the snap. Go a half turn at a time until you hear the snap.

Do the same thing on the other side, then synchronize the throttle bodies. ta da! fast idle is fixed.

Any particular amount of gap off the stop screw I should measure, like say with a feeler gauge? Or do you just eye ball it till it floats just above the screw?

No measurement there. You are only lifting it off the screw so that when you put it back on, you know you don't have any excess slack.
