I currently have the Continental 4.50 x 18 traditional tire with the parallel grooves (old style tire) but am looking to modernize now that I am down to the wear bars. It seems that the Continental grooves catch on the bridge grates, etc. and cause the bike to not handle well. Is there a 4.50 x 18 tire that is not so affected by road surfaces? Please advise.

Correct me if I am mistaken, but isn't 4.00-18 the correct rear for these airheads? In modern tires, there are many good choices from Avon. Bridgestone, Dunlop, Metzeler, and others.

400X18, is indeed the correct size, and many makers still make that size. A 110X18 would be closest size. A 400 is alittle taller, a 110 is alittle wider.
Big tires can be a pain to get on and off, plus they can rub on the drive shaft tube.

Yes 4.00 x 18 is the correct size for the rear tire on the R90/6. Given that, which tire Avon, Bridgestone, etc. is least affected by road surface such as bridge grates that cause the bike to wobble? Please advise.

Tires are a very boring and subjective topic, hence the lack of feedback that I hoped to get. Anyway, I have decided to go with the Conti Twin again on the rear despite the problem with bridge grate tracking. When the front tires needs replacing I will probably switch to something more conventional, Avon, Bridgestone, etc. Seems that I replace two rears for one front.

I put Avon RoadRiders on my bike in February and am very satisfied with them in myriad road conditions.

I tried Continental Blitz tires. They handle really well but didn't get very good mileage out of the rear, 4197 miles to be precise. Some would think that is good but I am not an extremely hard rider. The Blitz front has 2700 miles and still looks good. I replaced rear with a Metz.. Lasertek as I was going to try a pair of them, I worried about the combination but handling is great.
I am going to go with the Avon's Roadrunners next. I like staying with the stock size tires. Measured a 100 Dunlop against my 4.00 Metzler and found the 4.00 tire travels almost 2" more than the metric per revolution

I can also plug AVON roadriders. Not sure about mileage yet, but performance wise they are great.
I had some tracking issues similar to yours but that was mostly an issue with a bad steering head bearing. The Avon tires are definitley "modernized", however, I'd make sure you don't have a suspension issue before the tires get the blame.
