Odd filler cap, just plastic and O-rings (almost always had threaded metal with rubber gasket). It was suggested that I take out the insert and clean it and cap, which I did.
The whole setup does NOT seem to allow any way to make the seal a close and tight fit. I am getting some oil blowback; seepage around the filler cap and drizzles on the cylinder head.
I am pretty sure NO oil should leak or seep out around the filler cap.

What's up with mine"?

I'm not sure what you mean. Did you remove the fixture from the cylinder head?

I haven't had any trouble with mine. Is the blowby from the filler cap itself? Might need to replace the o-ring

There are two O rings. One between the plastic ring and the valve cover, and the one on the filler cap itself. Carefully lever out the black ring and replace that O ring - along with the one on the filler cap and you should be good for another 25,000 miles or so.

The neck itself has an O ring underneath. You can usually pry out the plastic neck with your finger, without removing the valve cover.

I periodically replace all four pieces -- cap, neck, and two O rings -- because it is a poor design and it eventually leaks. The sum of the four parts is cheap by BMW standards, at about $5.

I have the same problem with my oil cap (R1150RT 2002). After a trip to Daytona and when refilling the oil in a gas station, it started to leak. I tried to rotate the cap but I had the same results. I may have lost one of the O rings since I don't remember having two O rings but just the one on the cap.
I'll check again and will buy the one missing or will replace the 4 items in order to be sure.

You have to pry the plastic insert out of the valve cover to see the lower o-ring. I'm willing to bet that it is your problem. You need a new one.

Thanks for the input. I'll get the replacement parts needed.
