My integrated ABS system has failed--or rather, the rear circuit of the modulator has failed. A replacement is $2300. I might have access to a used modulator from a 2002 GS--all the fittings are the same, but it is different--including a different part number. I hear that some guys have traded the fully integrated modulator for the GS's partially-integrated system. My tech tells me he is not sure what putting that pump on the bike might do--perhaps only make the brakes work independently, perhaps create some kind of major computer difficulty, perhaps require some softward adjustment. Anyone have experience putting a GS braking system on an RT? Know of sources for an RT used pump? (Beemerboneyard shows their all sold). I want my airhead or K75 back.

Thanks, LT

LT,

I would suggest searching for a way to by-pass or even remove the ABS all-together. I'm sure some have done it here or on the BMWSportTouring forum. That is my plan should my '02 crap out.

I've been reading about removal--some are saying it is simple and straightforward, others that other problems pop up--speedometer problems, etc. Anyone have experience?

This is an article someone gave me last year. I don't want to pay the $2.3k either. My abs system still works at 65k miles but, I like to have a plan. What I've also learned is the solenoid valve that releases pressure to the brake circuit to prevent the wheels from locking up is a common failure. From what they said corrosion developes around the solenoid valving and when it operates due to a hard braking it failes to reseat. Routine maint.(flushing the system) is the solution. The fellow also said to exercise the abs circuits with hard braking at least once a month.

My RT has 65K and regular maintenance--including flushes.

They might have what you need and haven't posted it on their site. Also, they could call you if one comes in. Watch eBay as I see them there often.

The speedometer/odometer on your RT is all mechanical and cable driven by the front wheel. It should not be affected by alteration or removal of the ABS unit. I know several have removed the ABS system from their BMWs but I wonder if the braking effectiveness, aside from the loss of integration, is as good as a non-ABS bike. Are the master cylinders, calipers and rotors specially designed for ABS and thus less effective when it is removed? Is there any data out there on this?

If you are handy and have some time get an old failed IABS unit that you can rob a good rear drive motor from. About a year ago another fellow had the same problem and it was his motor. I don't know if that is what has failed on yours but, I know BMW(per Twisty1) made some software changes to save wear on that motor. It would be an experiment for sure that the replacement motor seals would be good enough not to leak after sitting but..... I took apart a failed IABS for parts for my unit if I ever need them. It took patience, a steady hand, and a dremel tool with a cutting wheel to cut off the 5 point security screw heads. It's an experiment I hope I never have to do.

Good Luck

Beemer boneyard almost always shows everything sold. let them know what you want and they will get back to you...
