NOTE 1 – This procedure will generate approximately 4 liters (quarts) of waste oil and filter.

Note 2 - even though DIY is shown for the RT it is applicable to all Hex Heads.

4 quarts oil - BMW Oil 20W50 BMW Part Number - 81229407685

Oil Filter - BMW Part Number - 11427673541

Washer for drain plug - BMW Part Number - 07119963252

3/8” Drive ratchet and extension

8mm Hex Socket

17mm combination wrench – for use with Filter wrench

Warm up the bike - get engine to normal operating temperature.

Put bike on Center Stand - should be a smooth and level surface

Location of Filter and Drain Plug - the view is looking up to the bottom of the engine on the clutch side. The highlighted spot on the picture is the drain plug

CAUTION - Oil will be hot if you warmed up the bike

Place a suitable oil draining container below the location of the drain plug and using an 8mm Hex remove the drain plug

Now remove the oil filter using the special oil filter wrench

After oil has finished draining from the oil filter area - wipe it clean and ensure there is no residue or debris left behind,
especially on the mating surface of the filter gasket and engine block.

The next step is personal preference.

I like to fill up the new oil filter with oil before replacing.

A must do, however, is applying a small amount of new, clean oil onto the filter gasket so that it tightens up well and
removes easily at the next replacement interval.

Carefully thread in filter until proper engagement is made and then torque to 11Nm

Once the filter is in you can replace the washer on the drain plug.

Please note that sometimes the washer gets stuck on the plug - the easiest thing to do is just snip it off

Insert drain plug with new crush washer and hand tighten to ensure proper thread engagement – once seated you can finish the tightening to torque of 32 NM

Filling up the oil

Now that the oil has been drained, the filter replaced, and the drain plug reinserted you can fill up the engine with new oil.

Use this wrench to open the oil fill port found on the clutch side Valve Cover.

The wrench is a part of the supplied BMW Tool Kit

Here is where the oil fill is located on the bike.

Mate the wrench to the oil fill cover and unscrew to open.

Now fill with your favorite oil

Once you have filled the engine with the required amount of oil, close the oil fill port and tighten hand tight.

Start engine and check for leaks.
