Does the cable go through the forks? Or should it be outside the forks on left side?

Mine is between forks - out to right

Thanks for your reply. How confident are you that it is as original?

Well, all my airheads seem more or less the same. Between forks, down along spine, drop to transmission.
To go outside it would seem yours is longer - I am not sure mine even could. Is it working OK?

Mine routes through the forks goes down left side and crosses about even with transmission connection point. Possibly dragging on entry point where it goes under the tank. Just realized you did not state if yours ran down the left or the right.

Speedo is OK. There seems to be a slight resistance in steering to left. Not the steering head bearing type. Cannot feel anything at stationary position or low speed. Only at 30-50 mph and was more noticeable when mountain climbing. I found at least two other possible contributing factors. Loose fairing mount at frame. Fairing slightly off center as forks pass through rubber boots. Both of these corrected. but there were no more mountains to climb (AZ CA). I cut the fairing boot out on the left as it needed replacing anyway. When I got back to TX I did not notice any resistance, but no mountains to climb :(.

Additionally my RR shock gave up the ghost. Am in process of correcting that now, awaiting rebuilt shocks to return. Guess that could have been a factor. I'm the kind of person that can come up with wild theories to explain almost anything.

It could possibly be steering bearing. There has been no activity in that area since 1985 when both bearings and races were replaced and torqued well over spec. The reason for overtorque, there was a constant need to re-tighten.

All these symptoms are very subtle so actual description is hard to make.
Another factor I've considered is steering damper. Currently set for 0. I've never heard of one dragging, but you never know?

42182, On my 92 RT it runs as yours does. Just noticed though, mine is rubbing on a sharp edge of a flat piece of metal that is welded on the left down tube. It is rubbing enough to have rubbed away some of the rubber on the cable. Have to correct that. I noticed this very easily because when I fire the old girl up this afternoon she was running on one cylinder.
