I have movement on my r1100rt at the 3 & 9 o'clock positions. In the forum, I have seen that it could be a pivot bearing or final drive bearing. Can anyone tell me what is for sure.
Thanks,Jim

~bump~

I am interested too. I have a minimal amount of play at 3-9 o'clock in the rear wheel.

look for any sign of oil on the inside of the rim.
have you wiped any oil film off?
the first clue is oil leakage

A tiny bit, like 1 mm at the rim or something, was acceptable but now some are thinking that none at all is better. Of course, too much preload is not acceptable either. I wonder if I had a mm or less, if it wouldn't be too hard to install the next size shim (going in the direction of tighter preload) and see what it was. Would there be a possibility of too tight in that case...if you started out with a tiny bit of play?

From my exhaustive inner-net research on this subject....:bottle

Have some one step on the rear brake firmly...this will 'lock' the FD and wheel as one unit.
Do your 3~9 & 12~6, as well as other points around the wheel.
If you get the same movement as when this is done w/ no brake....you need new pivot bearings, probably (maybe) not the crown bearing.
The 1100/1150s should have no movement...the 1200s can move ~1mm and still be OK.
Depending on how much slop you have, I might also drain the FD now and check the oil thoroughly for any metal bits...or even send a sample to BlackstoneLabs. Leakage could be an indicator, depending where it's coming from.
I did all of the above and also inspected my big bearing as best I could....

Bottom line for me since LY @ 32000mi...no metal on the drain plug, wheel slop the same w/ brake applied, Blackstone gave thumbs up on my oil, :deal
my crown bearing was a thing of beauty, and a set of JL Paralever bushings has my rear wheel set solid as a rock.
Been that way for over 4300mi now....

I applied the rear brake and now I notice play at 12 & 6 also ,there is no oil leak at all, the play seems to be the same at any spot. I change the oil last year and there was a couple small pieces of metal along with some black grime. This year only the black Grime and no shavings

The play is in the paralever pivot bearings. A fairly easy fix. Find a copy of the October, 2007 issue of the ON and look at the Benchwrenching column.
