r1100r transmission question

I've currently got my 00 R1100r apart for a spline lube at 40k mi.

The splines are dry and a little rusty but in decent shape.

My question is- with the transmission in gear sitting on my workbench you can turn the input shaft approximately 90 degrees before the output shaft starts to turn. This seems like an awful lot of slop to me. The transmission never made any noises or seemed to have any problems other than hard downshifting which will hopefully be cured by the spline lube.

Should I be concerned about this or is this normal?

There are big spaces between the engagement dogs. Of course in practice all the motion is in one direction so you don't notice when riding the bike.

The the amount of rotation of the input shaft before the output shaft turns depends significantly on which gear is engaged. 1st gear is the lowest so the free play (call it slop if you wish, I do) is greatest and 5th or 6th is highest so the free play will appear less. I say "appear" because the actual play may be the same but the translation to degrees of rotation is less with the higher gears.

And when we abruptly roll on and roll off in 5th gear we feel and hear much less clanking than if we do it in 1st gear.
