I replaced the battery since it was five years since the last one was installed thinking that would get rid of the slow cranking on start up. Well it didn't. So what to check next???:scratch
Thanks, I love reading all this stuff

I suspect that the starter needs to be repaired (or replaced). Slow cranking when the battery is known to be good is sometimes caused by a worn starter nose bushing, and is sometimes caused by a magnet coming loose in the starter.
It is also possible that a cable connection might be bad. It is easy to check the cables at the battery, and the positive cable at the starter. The negative (ground) cable is located underneath the battery tray and is a bit difficult to get to to make sure it is clean and tight. Which is why I would begin with the starter - which is the more likely cause anyway.

I too experienced the same on my 94 R1100RS. I found the magnets in the starter had come loose and were rubbing on the armature, causing drag and high voltage drop when cranking.
I had another used starter I bought on ebay, and I mixed parts to make one good starter. But I also re-epoxied the magnets into the armature housing with JB Weld high-temp epxoy. Now the old bike cranks over fast and starts much more easily.
This web site: www.euromotoelectrics.com sells the aramture housing with new magnets installed for about $45. Far better than $200+ for a new starter. If you are mechanically inclinded and have the tools, its about a two hour swap out.
