Greetings;
Pardon me for crashing the party, but hear me out!!
Today I called my buddy Jay, who is the manager of the Allen County Fairgrounds in Lima, Ohio, to inquire about a date for our 16th annual Northwest Ohio Rib CookOff (draws up to 25,000 people over the 12 hours, all day live music/beer/ribs!) and he told me that it would have to be July 16th as July 23rd BMW was coming in.
"BMW who?" I asked. "BMWMOA National Rally" he said.
Stunned silence on my part............."hey, that's GREAT!!!" was the only thing I could get out of my mouth then.
That was about 30 minutes ago, then I found the site and this forum.
Now for the reason that I am here; I happen to NO LONGER own a BMW motorcycle, nor am I a now BMWMOA member (was one many years ago), so I know I am trespassing on the forum, BUT, I know durn near everything you may need to know about this area, what to do, inside tips, resources, food, entertainment, weather, camping, travel times, airports, (stay at the fairgrounds is my suggestion on that one) etc. etc. etc. The tougher the question, the better.
So the only thing I'm doing here, is offering to be your "man on the ground" to help anyone from members/attnedees to Rally committee/staff people, with any advance info you might need. I know a boatload of people from the visitors bureau staff to the local Thai restaurant owner, and have resided here, with some exceptions, seemingly forever.
I'm a proud informal area ambassador and motorcycle enthusiast (currently limited to trail-biking!!) and welcome you to Lima in 2005. Post, email, or private message me, and I'll try to help everyone as I can.
Instead of me suggesting things of interest to people, etc. the easiest thing is for you to tell me specifically what you need to know/are looking for/etc. and I can then make a suggestion. i.e. rather than "what is there to do?", you might ask "recommend a 60 minute loop ride from the fairgrounds" or "who has the best ribs in the area?"!!!

So Mike - I am thinking you will need to get yourself a BMW so you can fit in with the rest of us. :)
Thanks (by the way) for the offer for assistance. I will contact you.

Yeah, for the money, I keep thinking I'll run across an older 750 or 900 twin; however, what I would really like (that fits my riding style) would be a GS model.
I've already told my old Lima buddy who now lives in Vermont, (and who has 4-5 BMW's in his "stable") and I bet he'll ride down!!
Maybe Santa will be good to me!

I also know of an older 900 twin for sale.

I'm up for it. It's right up my alley, and for me kind of a once-in-a-lifetime thing, since it's right in my backyard. I just feel compelled to help people enjoy the Rally experience, since we don't have the mountains/beach/killer locale.
Another idea is to give people some back routes to take when they are about 1 hour out from the site, to get off the highway.
And there IS one more dimension to the story; Red Sims. One of the best motorcyclists, in my opinion. Died a few years ago at about age 87, was still riding up until his cancer was too progressed.
He rode lots of makes, but was always partial to BMW's. He even still had an Isetta engine in his workshop when he died. He was a master welder and consumate mechanic/builder/designer/troubleshooter.
He also built/modified beautiful gas tanks that went on many BMW's, and even put a Subaru car motor on a slash 5 (I think) frame once.
If he had been alive and the BMWMOA Rally was at the fairgrounds, he would be in heaven. He lived about 3 minutes from the 2005 site.
When my high school buddies had problems with their Beemers of Guzzis or Nortons, they would finally take them to Red and he'd get them straightened out. He was one of those "ya gotta do it the right way" kinda guys.
Okay, I've rambled on enough about him. Great guy. I'll tell you about the BMW-based machine he built that I owned sometime.

Yours is (will be) an outstanding contribution. It will also serve to quiet some of those who are whining about the location. Sure, it ain't the ocean, but I'm guessing Lima will do just fine. Most everyone I know from Ohio is good people. With the possible exception of this prisoner: http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3464

Hi Mike,
Thanks for making yourself available to all of us. Can you give some insight regarding the Fairfield Inn at 2179 Elida Road. How close to the rally site and what is around the inn to see, eat and do if one has such desires at the end of the day.

The Fairfield is a good choice; fairly new, good shape, located 10 minutes across town from the fairgrounds; it is right in the retail hub, with the mall, three shopping plazas (including another Walmart) lots of restaurants, etc.
The east side of town where the fairgrounds are located is another retail center, but the area at the intersection of Cable and Elida Roads has more stores, etc. There are easily 20 restaurants within blocks of the motel. For non-chain good food/atmosphere, try Burgundys on Cable Road. There is a Bob Evans there for breakfast too, next to the motel.

Hi Mike,
thanks for your help and stepping up.
I think my wife will join me on this rallly and she likes to Hotel it.
So my Question is what is the best clean hotel or motel in the area ?
I don't need a Mariot or Sheraton, A Comfort Inn, Red Roof Inn or such would do fine.
Thanks.

The Wingate Inn, The Hampton Inn, the Fairfield Inn, and the Holiday Inn/Holidome would all be fine. Hampton Inn might be your best choice since it is nice, and you can literally see the fairgrounds from there.

The Hampton Inn is closed - we have completely booked it for the Committee Chairs, MOA Staff, and Ambassadors.
Anyone who would REALLY like to stay there should contact me, as I have several open committees that I still need chairmen for. :evil

The Hampton is all booked up for the Rally, so perhaps the Holidome would be the next best choice. The Wingate downtown (5 minutes from Rally site) has jacuzzi suites for reasonable $.

The Holidome has an indoor pool and a whirlpool in the same area. At Sue's negotiated price of $79. 00 a night this is your best bet. Also within 1 mile of fairgrounds.

Hey Mike, thanks for being our "insider"!
:idea
I was thinking you might save yourself the hassle of answering the same questions over and over if you put together some kind of list and posted it.
For example, I think everyone wants to know the top places to eat, drink, sleep, shop, ride, visit, see, etc. We would also like to know the places to *avoid*.
Personally, when I travel, I look for the hidden gems...the greasy spoon diner, and the hole-in-the-wall bar...you know, the places the locals go.
Thanks again!

I'll be working on that down the road; for the most part, though, I would suggest that what looks like is going to go on inside the Rally will be more interesting than most of the outside diversions. I know they are planning on a good lineup of live music during the evenings, for example.
Nonetheless, I will probably start a thread down the road such as you suggested, answering some common questions, etc.

Mike, I justs wanted to write publicly what I've emailed you privately: thanks so much for helping all of us out.
This will be my first MOA rallye, and I'm looking forward to wonderful Ohio "blue highways" (I always try to avoid slabs) coming from Western Maryland, from which I'll be entering West Virginia and then Ohio. Mike has promised to send these scenic suggestions to me -- but as has just been suggested, Mike, you might want to send them to the whole list for all who are similarly situated.
Thanks again, buddy!

Hey, Mike
Howard Snider and I are going to be the Chairpersons for Hospitality for the rally. I live in Findlay and work in Lima. Hospitality is about helping all to have a great time and as you have indicated in some of your posts find the neat places in and around the rally.
We met with Sue Manke at the fair grounds this past Saturday and she has a GREAT TIME planned for all. Howard and I have several others like yourself you are not exactly BMW MOA members but they are enthusiastic about the area and know much. Would you be agreeable to meeting with Howard and I and some others to scope out a plan to show the "Nay Sayers" what a great riding time can be had in the Ohio area.
If you would be interested please advise. You can call me at my office in Lima at 419 996 4841.

Mike,

p.s. I haven't seen much naysaying....what is the gist of it?
Way I look at it, 90% of the attraction is the rally itself anyway; plus, the location should help more people attend, given the #'s that live within an easy days drive.

I was coming back from work related stuff in Columbus Indiana Thursday, headed to my east of Cleveland OH home. I was enjoying some nasty straight but peaceful and scenic back roads. Then it dawned on me, I could stop in and check out the Lima site. So I jumped on the slab, 70 east to 75 north. I sure hope they are done with the construction there in time for the rally. I had a few cars try to take my front tire off diving for an off ramp.
We need scenic routes in. Coming in from 75 does not put one in a tranquil state of mind. But there are plenty of back roads in that will. Sue will need articles for the MOA magazine, scenic routes / suggested routes to the rally can take up much of an issue. Glad you locals are volunteering to help at the rally, in planning and to write some articles.

It depends upon where/how you want to enter Ohio, and how direct/indirect of a route you want. Lots of SE and S Ohio routes are fun............the large Detroit-based auto mags have used southern Ohio for years to do road tests, loving the terrain and road quality.
Anyway, for you, how about Route 50, then north on Route 16, (before Parkersburg), across the Ohio River to the river road, Route 7, to Marietta. Just out of Marietta, pick up scenic route 60 to scenic route 83. Take 83 all the way route 36 at Coshocton, 36 is another great ride. Take 36 west to Mt. Vernon, take 13 to north to 95, 95 west to Marion, at Marion take 309 all the way right to the Rally site!!! There are several diversions/alternates you could make. You are coming in one of the best ways for nice roads. I cam also recommend 550 out of Marietta. Take 550 to scenic route 13, just outside of Athens. Take 13 north
(p.s. at this juncture you could also take route 56 all the way from Athens to up near Urbana, Ohio; this is the hypotenuse; used to take it all the time, still rural but not quite as scenic; at Urbana, take 68 north to 117, then 117 to the Rally site; not a bad route all and all; if you take 56, consider stopping at Old Mans Cave, or one of the several state parks right around there) through Newark and on to Mt. Vernon, then pick up the directions above from Mt. Vernon to Lima.
I have been on all of these roads at one time or another; fun routes. Wish I had an immediate excuse to go travel some of these again!!
Let me know how you liked it, lucky dog!!!

Let me help Mike out some on the routes:
I recently purchased a set of DVD's entitled " Ohio Ride Guide" for $30.00 from :
http://www.ohiorideguide.com/
I have watched it and made copius notes so I can route you thru
roads with sweeping turns; twistys; hills; State parks; and good rest stops with great food on some of them.
Unfortunately most of these routes are from the East, or South.
Pa: Between cities of Erie to Wheeling W.Va
W.VA any city between Weirton and Huntington.
KY. any city between Maysville and Ashland.
I have put these on an Ohio map so pm me with city entering from and I can route you if the response isn't overwhelming. or you can purchase guide and route yourself at your leisure.
Coming from Indiana or Michigan, I would like to call on some riders from there for assistance as the roads on our side of the state line are pretty straight and flat with some exceptions
Will help as much as possible but I also have to prep for the rally.
Thanks for listening
Hey, Friends!
Let's get some of these routes down in writing, to share with the main membership. If you are reading this, then you are part of a small group of interested BMW riders. We need to move this information out to the main web page and the magazine --- and that's where you come in.
Please email me with your articles or ride ideas. As the rally chairman, it is my job to be sure to get the word out to everyone!
Thanks everyone. :)

They'll have that there, but two of my recommends are
The Bistro on Main (2nd block south of the Square); higher end fare
Burgundys, on Cable Road, very consistent, good quality and price, good atmosphere for fun at the bar.
Head north on 75 to Findlay for Japan West if you like good sushi, etc.
West North Street in Lima has Mark Pi's dine-in (not like the drive-thrus) for good Chinese.
The Kewepe is a must for a hamburger. Go to the original one downtown across from the municipal parking garage, on Elizabeth St.
The Meeting Place on Market St. has good coffees and lunches.
Best Pizza; Fat Jacks, 3 locations.
Looking for a hole in the wall, let me know!

Hey Mike,
I lived in Lima for a couple of years in the mid-60s and haven't been back since. I bought my first BMW, a 1966 R50, when I lived there but I got it from a wonderful guy named Bob Beasley? who had a dealership in Camden, Ohio that he operated out of his barn. Anyway, I'll be coming over from Baltimore and the routes you suggested are the ones I had decided I'll probably take. The rides around Lima are not great by hill country standards but getting there from the east are great.
I corresponded with another guy from Lima off this forum who has restored a couple of vintage BMWs. I have his name and email at home. Do you know him?
Thanks for all you help and I hope to meet you there.

There are other places for sushi, including another place in Findlay near the mall, but Japan West has been doing it for years (before the boom.........), serving area Japanese businessmen, and the quality seems better. They are on south Main in the downtown business district. They have hot and cold sake. I suggest calling for a reservation, esp. on weekends, as they are limited in size. Ask to be seated in the sushi bar area, unless you want the chop-chop grill experience. (not for me, I just like the sushi bar)

You know you are in the minority when you crave sushi. As soon as you hear someone else mention sushi, you want to immediately associate with them. At least that's the way I see it. It is especially true here in my new state of WV. Sushi=BMW and hamburgers/hotdogs=Harley's. I know who I want to hang out with, but I am all alone in this town. I am definitely in for sushi at that place in Findlay, OH. It sounds like we(forum posters) are going to have to have one of those meet and greet things for internet people.

I joined the MOA just a few weeks ago and have never been to an MOA rally. That will change though, as I have just booked a B&B (Rose Gate) for 4 nights in Findlay, having discovered there was "no room at the inn" in Lima (I'm not a camper, by the way). According to the B&B's owner, it would seem that at least one other BMW type has also booked the same four nights in July (the owner was trying to figure out what was up in Findlay, being a little surprised that someone would book 4 nights in Findlay, especially this far in advance. I let him know that the attraction was really in Lima). All this to say, does anyone have any suggestions regarding Findlay, like restaurants, Do's/don'ts etc. (I've seen the posts about sushi at Japan West)?

Mark, Findlay is a short 30 miles north of Lima and the rally on Interstate 75. There are several good resturants in Findlay depending on what you what to eat. If you have your hotel at the B&B then you can have any food you want from fine dining at the Bistro and Rucellie's, both on Main Street, to and a great place most do not get to called Diamond River, on Tiffin Hwy. Great food and lower price. Any questions just call at 419 420 7422 or once at the rally come by the hospitality booth and see me or Howard Snider.
Oh by the way, the sushi at Japan West is excellent!

I'd be up for a BMW sushi night at the rally. Any chance we can figure out a date/time for this? I'll be coming in late on Thurs, but could modify my route to make it to Lima a little earlier to meet/eat bmw/sushi folks.

I say we tentatively plan on Fri night at the sushi place in Findlay. That night seems like a good choice because most late arrivers will already be there and we won't miss the big happenings that usually take place on Sat night. Maybe we can get a count and someone local can call the place to find out how they are about reservations. - OR - We can just plan a time period and people can show up. Is this place large or is it a 'hole-in-wall'? As I said before, I will definitely be in. My $0.02 worth.

Another cat out of the bag.............
Very good. Highly suggest you not miss his show. He would be a strong enough act to knock Friday night dead without George; add 'em together=be there................
