Today a weird thing happened. I had made about a 100 mile highway run and parked on the side stand at a friend's. Two hours later when I started the bike, there was a substantial puff of blue smoke, like some of the old K bikes. This has never happened before (22K miles), and it didn't happen 80 miles later today when I took a break and restarted. I drained the airbox when I got home, but there was not much oil in it. The bike burns very little oil. Any idea what happened?

Your bike is ready to explode. I'll purchase it for $4000 right now.

Email me, and I'll be over to pick it up about 1:00 AM.
:D
Actually, several weeks back I ran into a friend from Ohio who occasionally experiences the same thing with his 2002 model. Apparently ... at least in his opinion, it is "just one of those things."

Frank-
I had that happen once on my 02RT. It happened right after a service, literally like 5 minutes so we just chalked it up to one of those things.
Never happened since. But then again I can count on one hand the amount of times I have used my side stand as a parking solution. (Not counting photos)

Interesting. Mine was right after a service.

Frank, not sure if the recent service is the problem, I think it is more the use of the center stand.

My R12 has done that exactly once. I almost always park it on the sidestand too. Wierd.

It sounds like that is a "feature" of the newer bikes. ;-)
Good to see you and the wife at MOA.

It is a normal thing on the R bikes. If the conditions are just right, a little oil will drain into the left cylinder, when the bike is on the sidestand. This will burn off when the bike is started. Why it only happens occasionally, I do not know. I asked my dealer about this and he said it only happens when the piston stops at a certain place in the stroke, and rings are in exactly the right position to allow it to happen. Don't know all the details, but I do know it is nothing to worry about.

Thanks, Trent. I guess I'll pass up Jon Diaz' generous offer of $4,000.
