View Full Version : F650 running issues?

Anyone have any info on whether or not the F650 cs's have any known running issues? I seem to have a mystery problem with mine. Twice now it's died and left me on the side of the road. First time chalked it up to *maybe* being out of fuel. Died at 50 mph, would not restart. Threw it in a truck and took it to my mechanic. Of course, it started right up for him. :banghead

Second time, full tank, only was running about 4 minutes, got to an intersection and died. Would not restart. Had to push it out of the way and screw with it. Finally, about 10 minutes later it started back up. Ran rough at first, then OK. Rode back home and parked it.
I've also had an intermittant rough running problem too.

Now I am leery of riding it anytime I need to be someplace (like work!). Can't afford to be stranded randomly.

I'm wondering if maybe these things have a throttle position sensor that could have gone bad? Or could I have a gremlin in the electrics?

Any recommendations as to anyone who is a wizard at diagnosing these things? Love my guy, just not confident that this has been fixed.

Thanks in advance.

for any and all info on the F650 go to the chain gang website, www.f650.com there you will find tons of info on your bike.

my '07 F650 died once on me and left me stranded. it ended up being a bad fuel pump (approx 10,000 miles) which was replaced under warranty. since then it has been 100% reliable and i would not hesitate to ride it any ware.

Water in the fuel?

Been over at chain gang. Not heartening. Another member has similar issues that he cannot diagnose. And no, I don't think it's water in the fuel. It will run great one minute, lousy the next.
It feels like a computer issues to me. Guess I'll call Max and see what they can tell me. :(

Some of those bikes came from the factory with the hoses reversed at the charcoal cannister which gave those symptoms. I doubt your hoses are reversed, but would bet your problem arises at the charcoal cannister. I suspect either a hose is kinked or the charcoal has become wet with fuel and is shot.

Trace the vacuum lines back and identify which line(s) it is at the cannister. Then remove and tightly plug that line. Make sure the vent line for the tank is also removed from the cannister and clear. Verify by blowing into the vent line and hearing air with your ear at the tank fill cap - open.

Then ride the bike and see if the symptoms go away. If they do - your cannister is clogged.

jhealey's wife here. Too lazy to log out and back in as myself. I'm not very knowledgeable about this stuff (yet!) but...

F650CS did have a fuel pump recall. I ran into that subject when I was researching to purchase a GS or a CS. When you call the dealer, ask for more details about the recall. I think they can check a database to see if the recall work has been done on your CS. The topic was covered on the Chain Gang forum, but it was years ago and the posts have been deleted.

These phantom type symptoms are really a bite, hard to diagnose if they only pop up occasionally. Good luck.

Hey thanks for the heads up on the recall. Will look into that asap. Also, my cannister has one hose broken at the cannister. I was told it's no big deal but...maybe that's what is doing it??
