i dunno. when i got my bike i didnt spend my free time in front of the computer, i was out trying to see if i could make the odometer bearings smoke. :D
we all know how it is, you cant focus. you keep walking out to the garage to look at it. you contemplate moving into a handicapped-accessible house so you can wheel it around into all the rooms with you...

Wow. People really do read sig lines! Who knew?!?
OK. I’ll try to keep this short. Yes, I have pictures. After taking a 4,500 mile trip on Hilda (my trusty ’75 /6) I decided that I needed a new motorcycle. At first, I thought that I might switch to K-bikes after meeting so many cool K-bike folks (and their bikes) in Spokane. But I am truly a boxergrrlie, and after riding several models including the GS, I decided that I could not live without an R1100RS.
But which RS? I felt like Goldilocks: this RS is the wrong color…this RS is too much money and has no aftermarket accessories…this RS has 2 recalls that have not been addressed in the maintenance records. Then I was browsing the IBMWR classifieds and read about a black R1100RS in S. Carolina. This bike was just right!
So I bought a plane ticket to Greenville. I would meet the seller at the dealership, where they would look over the bike and I would ride home. Simple. Then BMWRTGIRL/Tracy offered to ride out and we could ride back together. Perfect! Since we were in the area, we could take an extra day and ride the Blue Ridge Parkway. Ideal.
The night before I left I was talking with a friend on the phone about my pending purchase and the ride home. He mentioned that Deal’s Gap would be nearby. Maybe I could ride that since I was there. Hmmm. What a great way to get to know the new bike! Thanks John!
So at 4:30am I head to the airport, and a couple of hours later I am at the dealership meeting Tracy, the seller, and a totally suh-WEET black RS. The transaction went smoothly. Touring Sport BMW in Greenville was great and the seller took lots of time to explain stuff about the bike. Remind me - why are you selling this kick-ass bike? Nevermind. I couldn’t wait to go for a ride!

So off Tracy and I go to Deal’s Gap. We got there as it was getting dark, so we decided to call it a night, so that we could get up early and do the Dragon before the squids got up. We spent the night in a cabin at the wonderful Iron Horse Motorcycle Lodge in Stecoah, NC.

So where is the picture of the bike?!:dunno

We start our day at 6am the next morning. The lodge serves a great breakfast and you can talk with other riders over your eggs, grits, and coffee. After heading out, we stop at the gas station on the South end of Deal’s Gap and Tracy buys a sticker “Even though I haven’t earned it yet.” We have some water, look at the Tree of Shame that is decorated with various bike parts that have been left on the road, and then we head out. Fortunately there is very little traffic, although there plenty of riders out already. I am riding very conservatively on my less-than-24-hour-old-purchase and Tracy leaves me behind immediately.
About half way through the 11 mile pass I start to relax, get into a groove and enjoy the road. I am actually having fun when I come around a corner to see a woman in the road flagging me down. As I pull up to her and can see past her van, I see a motorcycle in the ditch, some blue Darien and I know that it is Tracy.
If you’ve ever seen a friend down, you know what I felt – I could hardly get my bike stopped and parked. Tracy ran up to me yelling that she was OK. I had a little cry out of relief as I helped the folks from the van get the bike out of the ditch.
Tracy was a total trooper - I guarantee that she earned her sticker. She and the RT were bruised but OK. She left some bits of bike in the ditch, but not enough for the Tree of Shame.

Fortunately her bike started and we headed to The Great Smokey Mountain National Park for some less exciting riding. The park was one big traffic jam though, and I took a wrong turn and led us onto a hellish 11 mile one-way scenic drive. 20 miles per hour, behind SUVs as far as the eye could see. Ugh.
Drum roll please.....Here’s me and the new bike in a less crowded part of the park.

From there, we went to the Blue Ridge Parkway, which was my favorite part of the trip. What a beautiful road. We were riding for a while when our partly sunny day turned to fog and then to rain. We had no visibility. Tracy made it clear to me that she was done for the day and that she needed a shower and some soup. “No more twisties” she said “I want to get on the freeway.” I thought of how that would probably make Cliffy cringe! We did some miles on the slab, got a hotel, and rode home on Friday. Here’s Tracy on the BRP after the weather turned nasty:

Very nice looking....
So when are you coming to visit on your new scoot? We all know any excuse for a ride.

That’s pretty much the end of the story except that I washed the bike on Saturday and it wouldn’t start. No, I did not use a high pressure hose. The battery cranked the bike well, but it wouldn’t turn over. RID and all lights came on. It sat all day Saturday and Sunday in the sun with the hopes that whatever it was would dry out. I looked the bike over well to make sure that I didn’t knock a wire or something loose. Monday morning it still wouldn’t turn over so WI Club member and fellow 1100RS owner Jim Guthrie came over with his trailer and we went over the bike at his shop. I’ll spare you the details, but we went over everything and tested everything that we could with a multi-meter but we couldn’t figure it out.
So we took it to the dealer. They think that it’s the Hall Sensor. We’ll see. I’ll keep you posted!
Oops! I almost forgot - MUCH thanks to jdiaz for his advice and detailed information about the 1100RS. Also thanks to gsmetal for many leads on bikes.

that is a great looking bike. [the crowd roars] im guessing it will inspire more baiku from you.
too bad about tracy - think she'll post a get-off report so we can all learn from what happened? i hope so. what great luck that the bike was able to finish the trip with her. i assume she is an ATGATT person, and that's why she was able to finish the trip no problem too. my hat's off to her for intelligence and toughness.
the whole hall-effect sensor thing seems like one heck of an annoying failure. people spend hours and hours trying to figure out what is going on with their bikes. sounds like it's under control though.
again, congrats.

Styli-OOOO!
Welcome to the 21st century! We've had ours for about 7 years now and still love it. As Rob Nye put it, the RS is like a Visa card, everywhere you want to be.

Congratulations Rebecca.Black is a great colour.(Absence of colour?combination of all colours?)
Sounds like a great ride except for the heart in the throat bit about BMWRTGIRL.
I rode a pal's K1200RS a while ago and it has opened my mind to a K.

'75 R90/6 - needs a good home
'96 R1100RS - needs a name
probably late on this as you may already have a name picked out but.....
Hmmm... how about "Hall Sensor" or just "Hall" for short?:D

based on what little i've seen on this board, that thing should be called the 'halt effect sensor.' :D

How about Broom? After all the new RS seems to have swept Hilda away. :stick
Okay seriously - I always thought Indigo would be a cool name for a bike, but it didn't stick on the RT so I give you the option.

That's a sweet looking bike.
A couple of questions: 1) What is the Hall Effect Sensor, and what does it do?
2) Do most people name their bikes? Honestly, it never occurred to me to name mine.

Name their bikes, that is.
In my opinion not all bikes deserve names, some just sort "fit". My old black RS is "Black Beauty". I didn't think about the name, it just sort of came to me. Sort of like the horse of the same name, if you remember the book/story from your childhood.
I also have a red Honda Shadow that remains unnamed. Maybe someday a proper name will come into my head that seems appropriate.

Here is a link to a thread about the HES - HES thread (http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2637&perpage=15&highlight=bike%20wont%20start&pagenumber=1)
Towards the end KBasa has this description of what the HES does: "It reads crank position via a magnetic sensor and reports back to the FI system and the ignition system so they know when to do their jobs."

Oh, that is the shade of black you went with. Hmmmm, I guess I was expecting the other black. At least you are happy with it.
Good story - sorry about your HES. I am confident that the proper name will burst forth from heaven at just the right tyme.

I've never named bikes with any kind of anthropomorpic personalization. I name them things like "the big red bike", "the Roadster", "the big sled".
I've always found names to be a little too cutesy for me.

Yup seems about right. I am definitely not cute.
Motorcycles don't get people name, they get thing names. However nothing fits my RT but "RT"

Excellent new scoot, and what better way to break it in than a trip home on the BRP/Deals Gap, etc. So sorry about RT's off. Glad she wasn't hurt.
But why off the /6? No where to put it? Me, I'm LOTS better at buying bikes than selling them!
