is there any way to put a real fuel gauge on this bike, instead of the 7L and 4L idiot lights?

Dear ???

I'll have to assume you're talking about an '85 or earlier K100 since starting in '86 - they didn't have both lghts.

The quick answer: maybe - if you're willing to spend way more money than the bike is worth.

To convert to the newer system which does away with the wacky thermal-resistive sensor BMW used, you have to:

1. Replace tank with '86 or later tank which has the float type fuel level sender in it.

2. Replace wiring harness with the '86 or newer harness which has the correct connector and wiring for the later float-type fuel level sender.

3. Replace instrument pod with the '86 or newer pod which has circuitry for the new float-type-sender.

With new parts - you're looking at about $2,000 or so. Used parts less. Figure labor of about 5 shop hours (at whatever they charge in your shop) if you don't DIY.

A suggestion - see the website: http://www.fuelplus.com and ask Dave to put you on the short list for the new Fuel+ when he has it ready for release. Then take the bulbs for the two warning lights out of the instrument pod.

BTW - it helps a LOT if we know the year of the bike. There were a number of changes made through the years..

Will the new Fuel Plus work on the K75S?

I really don't know.. but you might ask David - his email is on the website.

As a WAG - it will. But that's just my guess.

Thank you very much...It is an 85 K100 Rt.....What I was wanting to do was add a new fuel gauge (where the speakers are).

Unfortunately - it's not simple to do that. There are some major differences between the '85 and earlier K bikes and the '86 on ones.

I forgot that mounting a later model tank also requires modifying the frame since the later tank mounts differently.

If it was me - I'd get on the waiting list with David W for the new Fuel+.

I've been using the original ones (on my '85 K100RT and on my current '87 K75S) and wouldn't leave home without them :)

Don, I tried this web-site today and it would not work. Do you know if it has changed or not?

Does BMW stand for Big Money Wanted??

Thanks

Roy

Just worked for me. A transient outage on the internet isn't unknown.

And I will make no comment on your other question.

Best,

Thanks Don,

I tried the fuel plus website this morning and it worked fine.

Other question, is what the local dealer says BMW stands for ;)
