If you fallow racing you are probably well aware that two riders duking it out, even if they are front runners, will often turn in slower lap times than others out racing. How will BMW fair in this duel? The press seems willing to put BMW and Aprilia in a side-bar duel and cover it from that perspective. In Formula 1 BMW has gained respect as an elite team and front runner playing a side-bar role to Ferrari and McLaren. Will it do as well in the two wheeled racing forum of WSBK?
Farther down in today’s MOTORREADS Motorcycle Daily has a piece on Cagiva. Harley-Davidson’s acquisition of MV Agusta and Cagiva puts new pressure on BMW from another front. While MV presents a track threat to BMW if H-D develops it in that direction, Cagiva presents a showroom threat.
Cagiva has languished as a brand over the last years. H-D seems ready to bring it back to life. Rumors of a new Elephant and now a Mito suggest that H-D cannot afford to let the brand sit idle as it expands in Europe and expands markets in North America.
If BMW’s expansion into the WSBK arena gets mired in the comparison with Aprilia how will this impact their street bike’s sales? The value of a European bike in the U.S. for many is that it is different than all the others. In the superbike niche a racer BMW is very different and helps buyers overcome the pricing. With the other new entrant in WSBK from Aprilia and the potential of another challenger in the H-D Euro brands how will BMW do in its new venture?
In World Superbike racing the race is on the track but the finish line is in the showroom.
