I am planning a July 2009 ride from NY City up and around the Gaspe Peninsula. We will be on the road 6 days and I am requesting help in locating nice places to stay and eat. There will be six riders in our group so small B&B are not an alternative. We enjoy being able to walk to dinner after a full day on the road. Any help or suggestions will be appreciated. We are not campers but due to the economy have to watch expenses.

With thanks for your suggestions.

To me, it sounds like you're going to have to plan your route and stops fairly well ahead of time. You're only going to find lodging choices in the larger towns like Matane. Quebec isn't plastered with commercial chains like the U.S. In 6 days there last Labor Day weekend, I only saw one McDonalds (suits me fine!)...

This resolution of the map ought to give you a good idea how sparse lodging is, and I wouldn't count on finding it in every town that's marked on the map.

Heres a good website.

For some tasty croissants, mouth watering fudge and coffee,
Cafe du Monde (338 Rue St-Jerome) in Matame.

How does walking 100' sound?

A friend of mine stayed at the Auberge Du Gargantua overlooking the town of Perce.

The food was incredible, according to him.

I can't seem to find their dedicated web site, but I have come across it in the past.

Tom, not an issue. I got my motels on the fly.

Motel au Toit Blanc on the 132 in St. Luce, Quebec. Your back door is right on the river. Pic-nic tables.

Motel Carol in Pasbebiac, Quebec.

Sea Gull Motel, Shediac Bridge, New Brunswick. 1 866 532-2530

I made that trip last June, and agree that Matane and Perce are good places to to stay. I also agree with Alex: make stops when you want.

I had the most fun for about 150 miles of hills and turns with eye-popping views, beginning at Ste. Anne des Monts on the north shore (see below). Beware of the speed trap coming into town from the west on 132. The south shore is less scenic and twisty, but 132 north along the Matapédia river is a good ride.

I stayed at this clean and reasonably priced motel three years ago the night before arriving at Gaspe Bay. Now granted it is 312 km north of Gaspe Bay, but it really was a lovely ride.

Let me re-phrase that. I camped 3 nights in Quebec, but the only towns I saw places where motels passed curb-muster for me were Matane, Gaspé, and Percé.

Granted, I rode a lot of places where there are no power lines, although my point was that if I was gonna do motels, I'd have to plan ahead for my Marriott taste.

These might have been in New Brunswick, but they were from the same trip -- gotta get that GPS to camera plotting thingie working...
