I just installed a new oil pan gasket on my /5. The book said to use a sealant with the gasket, so I did. After the fact,I read that I shouldn't use sealant with the new fiberglass gasket. Now what?

Robert,
I just wouldn't worry about it as long as the oil remains inside the engine.
The sealant might not have been strictly "necessary" but it won't hurt anything.
In the worst case, it might make it a bit more challenging to remove the pan, (next time) and (depending on what sealant you used) might require some tedious scraping to remove the gasket from the crankcase and pan - "down the road."
Don't lose any sleep over it!
(And don't go crazy tightening those pan bolts!)

Careful who you admit this to.. :whistle

Be sure to re-torque in the suggested tightening sequence after 500 miles or so. I just did this and it needed it more than I would have thought.

I bought an extra set of pan bolts (with new washers), cross-drilled all the heads, swapped them one at a time with the ones on the bike and safety wired them together in pairs.
My pan bolts aren't going anywhere that I don't go!

What are you going to do when things settle in? Sure the bolts are going to stay put, but the gasket material is going to give. Seems like a PITA to remove the safety wire, retorque, and re-safety wire. My 0.02...safety wire is fixing something that isn't broken. My oil pan bolts haven't moved one iota since then went on. Safety wire? We don't need no stinkin' safety wire...:wave

Sure, it's a PITA (to some extent) but hey, I do this everyday, for a living.
You get to where you "just do it" without giving it a second thought
I'm not saying that YOU should do it! But it works for me. :rocker
