this was discussed on the main mountania thread, and with this post just made in the rally forum (http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/showpost.php?p=424895&postcount=14), it's time to get serious about planning a BBQ ride.

several places there sound worthy, are there any other ideas?

a good time to do this might be mid-late march.

it could also be a weekend/campout kind of thing, where we could sample 2-3 or more different places.

what say ye? :ear

Do we want to just ride for BBQ or do some recon for the MOA??

Mid to late March would be fine.

Sounds like fun, I'm still waiting on the Georgians finalising the March dates for a Saddlesore run, just been to the website and there's no new postings.
Are we talking "Tomato -based" barbecue sauce or the nasty stuff??

there is something wrong with this map....

except for murphy, they ain't got no bbq joints in mountainia ... just in points *east* of mountainia.

what's up with that?????

well, here are some thoughts for the assembled group to consider.

- for those that wish to camp on a saturday night, meet up somewhere mid-morning on saturday to set up camp and then head for q.

- for those who don't want to camp, either meet us at camp and ride to q or meet us for lunch.

- after lunch, ride.

- q for dinner.

- get up sunday morning, break camp, ride to a lunch spot for q.

- head home.

sound like the rough outlines for a plan?

late march or early april-ish.

i *think* that our saddlesore run is going to be in november, in conjunction with the shrimp boil.

hey "other" ian -

more likely than not, it will be western-NC-style q (http://hkentcraig.com/BBQexp.html) which is a tomato-based sauce added to something with vinegar and whatever spices the chef deems suitable.

personally, i like south carolina-style, but too many people say "gakkk" when that is mentioned.

Don't know I thought the same thing. I'm working on a file for Mapsource with some locations marked

late march or early april-ish.

There are two GNCC (http://www.gnccracing.com/) races in that time frame. March 21-22 Steele Creek GNCC in Morganton NC and April 4-5 in the Big Buck GNCC in Union SC which we go to every year.

wade - this is a bmw mc owners of georgia annual event, at our november club meeting. someone usually rides over to beaufort, sc and buys some shrimp offa da boat and brings it to the meeting.

it's at high falls state park (http://www.gastateparks.org/info/highfall/), on november 8.

our boiler is pretty darn good, but i don't think we'd mind a few guests...

in deference to scbmwrider, and acknowledging that it can still be danged cold in march, let's shoot for april 18-19

the thought is to meet at a campground for a late saturday morning departure to a bbq spot for lunch... then a ride... then bbq for dinner, then camp.

i'm thinking high country cycle camp... i haven't been there in a long time!

http://www.highcountrymotorcyclecamp.com/Assets/hcmcmap8.5t.jpg

is it possible for folks to get there before noon?

the other alternative is a spot i know near hot springs.

Ok did some research and visited the North Carolina BBQ Society and this is what I have put together. If all agree I will plan the trip and mark out some incredible roads for our travels.

Leave Saturday Morning from the Mooresville Area around 9am ish.

Head West through Shelby, Lake Lure into Arden for our lunch stop at
12Bones BBQ

We leave Arden and travel south to HWY 64 through the Highlands and into Cherokkee ending up in Murphy NC about a 3-4 hour ride to Herb's Pit BBQ

we spend the night in Cherokkee,

Leave Sunday morning out of Cherokkee through the north west portion of the state BLP and some other great roads we head 240 miles east to Mocksville for lunch at Deano's BBQ after that we head home.

I will contact each establishment and let them know we are coming and hopefully they will have some special accomodations for us.

So what do you think

wade - oops, we had a bit of a disconnect.

i made this post about the BBQ society earlier, (http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/showpost.php?p=427007&postcount=8) and had already suggested some destinations that are more north of asheville, and nearer to the rally.

then later, i suggested high country cycle camp (http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/showpost.php?p=427007&postcount=8). (still trying to find out if they're open... but there are other good spots in the area)

i was thinkin' that we'd do a little report about some of the bbq that's nearby the rally. we've received some good recommendations in that area.

but, i am totally flexible to whatever the group wants to do. the ride you've outlined is a good one and i'll leave it up to the mountainia hillibillies to decide.

and i could use the support on the ride planning. :nod

here's the post about bbq nearby johnson city (http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/showpost.php?p=424895&postcount=14).... i've heard the Ridgewood place mentioned by several locals in the know.

i know, forums suck for clarity.

the issue at this point is whether High Country Cycle Camp is open (still trying to find that out). a backup spot is Rocky Bluff (http://www.cs.unca.edu/nfsnc/recreation/RockyBluff.pdf) which is near Hot Springs, NC. And if looks like 40 people are going to show (what club are we talking about...?), there's a spot in Hot Springs that's a commercial campground, but it does feature a beer store... the only one in the area. :evil

personally, i am open to all ideas.

but yes, let's firm it up... all details to date should now be known by all.

Proposed:

Dates: April 18-19

Place: High Country Cycle Camp (if open) or Hot Springs area, if not.

Plan:

Saturday
- Set up camp on saturday morning. for those who can't make it then, should be no problem setting up camp that evening.

- Ride to lunch
- Ride
- Ride to dinner
- Camp

Sunday
- Ride to lunch
- head home

i am definitely open to different camping locations (always good to learn about new spots) different areas, etc.

also completely open to restaurants.

Just faxed a note to 3 friends in the Tri Cities. One in Johnson City, 1 Kingsport and 1 in Bristol, asking for BBQ recomendations. I'll keep the group posted on what I get back.

Thinking that if all 3 say one place that might be somewhere that we will want on our list.

Local Information is usually a good thing.

Cool, but all of these are near the rally cite,

are we going to visit each one and just ride around for a few hours until we are hungry again or should we explore the state and do some real riding from one destination to another.

I have no problem with eating near the rally cite but I dont think all three places should be in the same area

i'd like to spread hte ride out instead of 3 places near the rally

there are lots of incredible roads near Johnson City but also some incredible roads in Surry Ct. Pilot Mt area, the Highlands etc

imput please ?

we've got a day, essentially.

i could plot you a route from highlands to johnson city that would take you two days to ride, three if you want to ride gravel. :nod

it depends on what kind of riding we all want to do. as noted above, there are tons of really good, but small and out of the way, roads to ride in the area. one could literally spend days puttering around. for instance, get out a detailed map and check out nc194 or nc197. dem are some sweet rides! and those are *state* highways, there are many other little local roads branching off those that are amazing.

or... one could cover more ground taking roads like us19, us23, us64, us421, us321etc... parts of which feature really nice sweepers through mountain passes, and get you to a number of smaller spots quickly.

personally, i am totally open to what the group wants to do, so let's firm that up first.

oh... an update. just spoke with the wife of the owner of high country cycle camp (http://www.highcountrymotorcyclecamp.com/) and will speak with the owner later today. they spend the off season out in kitty hawk, and believe they'll be open by april 18-19. if 30-40 people plan to show up, they'll *definitely* be open.

blue ridge motorcycle camp (http://www.blueridgemotorcyclecamp.com/) is another option. they'll definitely be open that weekend.

i have no idea what this event will turn out to be, but it's fun to watch it build. :thumb

everyone, please chime in.

ok, spent a little of lunchtime to map out a potential ride.

imo, this will be too long for a larger group.... but, i thought i'd share to at least get people's reactions to the type of riding.

this loop is 370 miles long. don't sound like much until you look at it on the map.

it's mostly twisties, and lots of good'ns! :nod

i will assure you that if we get going by 10am, we'll be doing good to be done by dark. and you will be flat wore out!

lunch at ridgewoods, dinner at windy hill (in sparta, nc). still trying to find out exactly where windy hill is... it was recommended by DaveSlash5, and the place is owned by an airhead rider.

what do you all think about a ride like this?

finding Windy Hill BBQ in Sparta, NC.

from DaveSlash5 (http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/showpost.php?p=424895&postcount=14), this place sounds perfect:

If you are on the Blue Ridge Parkway or HWY 221 near Sparta, NC (close to the NC/VA border) and love BBQ try the Windy Hill Bar-B-Que on HWY 21 between Sparta and the BRP. This is a little trailer in a parking lot of a produce stand, and these folks produce some of the best BBQ in that part of NC. They do the smoking at their house and many of their side dishes come from their garden when in season. Think French Fries from potatos that were dug up on that morning! The owners were trained under a CIA (Culinary Instute of America) chef, so they know their stuff. The owner, Steve, is also an Airhead guy; Tell'em Dave sent you!

i've got an em in to Dave, hoping to find out something about these guys.

anyone know about em?

ian

ps => as far as planning goes, you need to know that there is a reason my BMW ON column is called "always an adventure." iow, there ain't gonna be no engraved invitations! and a map is highly unlikely. we will have to turn around at least once because the road turns to gravel. that is, unless you don't mind gravel. :ha

i caught up with daveslash5 and got additional information. the phone number he gave me was different, but it sounds like yours worked, too.

it's between the BRP and Sparta, 6 miles west of the BRP, 2 miles east of Sparta. So we won't have a waypoint, but i am sure we can find it.

as the time gets closer, i'll probably give him a shout again to remind him, and give him a sense of how many people are coming.

the date is set. the location is still open, if anyone wants to do something different.

i am looking for comments on the route. at 370 miles of nearly pure twisties, i think it might be too long for most people. i will probably refine it, and ultimately play it by ear, depending on when people show, when we can take off on saturday, etc.

like i said, i am not the time of event organizer that sends engraved invitations, or even has printed maps. no t-shirts, either! :p

above i mentioned that i've talked to the new owner of HCCC (http://www.highcountrymotorcyclecamp.com)... he will be open.

you must not have been there before, so, do visit their web site, it's linked behind the name.

do not try to find this place for the first time at night. (although the waypoint they provide on the site will make this much easier).

it's fairly remote, a pretty long run to the store. you would be best to bring it along with you.

turkey tom used to allow beer (and pot, if you were discrete)... but i don't know about the new owners.

If you factor in time to eat gas etc. we are looking at about 12 hrs of riding.

A couple factors from reading other things. From reading and talking to friends Ridgewood can be hard to get in to. In the evening they will tell you sorry you won't make it in, go somewhere else. Would the Windy Hill guy consider bringing His Q to the camp for dinner. :dunno

Here are a couple route files broken down into segments

for sure, it's too long, especially if there are a lot of people. that's like herding cats.

yeah, that's why i thought them for lunch... and it would help if we got there either early, or had a late lunch.

you have some good routes to that place. a direct shot over there via 421 would be pretty fast and get in some primo twisties.

Would the Windy Hill guy consider bringing His Q to the camp for dinner. :dunno

good ideer. it's 60 miles and it would depend on how many people we got coming.

the owner rides airheads, so you never know. i will ask when i contact him.

wilkesboro is the nearest option.

there are some sweet B&Bs up in blowing rock, but the fastest way there is on gravel roads.

if all goes as planned, i plan to arrive on friday evening.

if we want q for lunch and dinner, we will have to blow out of the campground fairly early.

logistically, i don't know if that's possible for folks.... so we'll just have to play it by ear.

i am nowhere near that anal, or organized.... hence the title of my column, "always an adventure"

once we pot things, i'll post more.

for right now, be at the high country motorcycle campground nlt 10am on saturday, 4/18 because if we are going to be able to ride anywhere good for lunch, we better be rolling no later than then.

it would be better to get there the night before and camp.

destinations: overall restaurant ratings, have they ever had a visit from Chef Ramsey, if so what did he find in their walk in, miles and kilometers to their door, and distance of possible wrong turns (IAN) , where their meat comes from and if they smoke it what brand of charcoal is used (I prefer Kingsford)

yes, this is a very bmw-friendly place.

for years, this place was owned by turkey tom, who was an early afficianado of the GS, and formed the GS International Club (now dormant, needs to be rekindled).

tom used to put on a GREAT fall rally for GS riders... everyone got lost! :thumb (these were the days before GPS)

the airheads hold "the gathering of the clans" there every year... quite an event.

i've not me brent, but when i talked with him on the phone he sounded like he is working hard to make the campground a success.

Ridegewood for lunch.
This is an ambitious morning ride to Ridgewood. lots of twisties, including the Snake.

This is nearly the same at SCBMWrider's "To Ridegewood BBQ" route in his BBQ2 zip (post 58 in this thread)

This would make for a late lunch at Ridgewood. i hear this place gets crowded and they just tell you to go someplace else if they're real busy. i am also going to call these guys and see if they do take out. with all the saddlebags we're bound to have in this group, we might just haul a load out to a good picnic spot.

And if they're full, Pardners is right nearby.

Windy Hill for lunch

This is a shorter ride, and probably a better option for if we get a late start.

i am going to call this guy and see what his interest is for delivering to the campground. if he will do that, we could just head back there for dinner.

any other ideas/opinions?

we can play the afternoon by ear, or if i get a sense of what everyone likes to do, we can plot the afternoon route to another destination.

I have followed with interest the evolution of your BBQ Ride and see there will be a stop-over for a Ridgewood BBQ carryout picnic at the park in Bluff City, TN, this Sat evening.

Bluff City is only about a 40 minute ride from my home in Abingdon, VA, and I would like to join you for dinner Saturday PM if you can let me know your ETA at the park. I'll bring my own BBQ, probably from Parks Mill near Abingdon.

Is there any way I could be of help to shuttle your BBQ from Ridgewood to Bluff City, perhaps with the use of my cage rather than the 1200RT?

hey cal - it's cool that you can come... you definitely need to ride!

given that we're going to need to ride back to the campground after supper, and it's about 85 miles back to the campground, much of it twisty, i think we want to get to the restaurant about 5:30.

that will still mean some after dark riding, but reasonable.

we will be plumb tuckered out!

my cell number is 770-329-8756 if you want to call and/or text me. if you tell us what you want on the menu, we'll order it at noon on saturday.

My good intention was to leave this morning. Stop at Oakdale, TN tonight and then ride the rest of the way tomorrow.

However, first I had to mow grass yesterday. Mower won't start. Grrrrrrrrrr.

Oh well, lets get the bike ready. Cord showing on the rear??????? Grrrrrr.

No problem, put on the new pair in the garage.

Putting front back on this morning and looked at the brakes! Grrrrrrrrrr Shot

No problem, have a spare GS in the garage and the brakes are the same.

Get new fuel line and filter, pull the tank so I can replace hose. Crank, crank and crank and no start for the mower.

No problem. Will borrow neighbors. He says fine. So I mow and then want to power wash it before I take it back.

Power washer pump makes bad sound and quits.

No problem. Hose it off and take it back.

Now, at 1:53 local time I just finished my shower and should leave by 2:30.

By God, I'm going to NC for Q and nothing is going to stop me.

See ya all sometime. :wave
