Hell's Gate '09

Monday, 16 February 2009

Lettenbichler scales the heights at Hell’s Gate
BMW Motorrad Motorsport team rider Andreas Lettenbichler has placed among the seven finishers at the ’09 running of the Hell’s Gate event in Italy. One of the toughest one-day enduro style races in the world, Letti placed an impressive sixth as trials riders and WEC regulars filled the final finishing positions.
Bringing together many of Europe’s best extreme enduro riders Lettenbichler and BMW team-mate Gerhard Forster were among 50 riders hopeful of qualifying for the infamously tough main Hell’s Gate race. Faced with a four-hour qualifying enduro, which itself was anything but easy, Letti and Gerhard cruised through into the main event after finishing seventh and 11th respectively.
Well aware just how demanding the four-lap Hell’s Gate race would be both riders set off from the start hopeful of remaining near the front of the race. With riders removed from the competition by the event organisers when they fall more than 30 minutes behind the leader, both riders pushed hard to ensure they remained in the event.
With defending Hell’s Gate winner Taddy Blazusiak setting the pace at the front of the race it wasn’t long before the organisers started removing riders from the rear of the field. But having started well, and maintaining a solid pace, Letti spent much of the first half of the race in fifth. Frustratingly for Forster his race was ended having dropped too far behind the leaders. One of the last riders to be withdrawn from the event Gerhard had nevertheless given the event his all and showed just how tough he and his G 450 X were.
With a prized finishing position well within his reach Letti continued to work his way towards the finish, being past by just one rider during the closing stages of the race. Comfortably less than 30 minutes behind eventual winner Blazusiak, Letti found the final hour of the race hard but still found the energy to muscle his way to the top of the event’s finish line, named Hell’s Peak. In doing so he claimed a well-deserved sixth place finish giving BMW their best ever Hell’s Gate result.
Andreas Lettenbichler – BMW G 450 X: “I always knew that the Hell’s Gate event would be tough, but I wasn’t expecting it to be as tough as it was. There was nowhere you could relax because the ground was frozen - you needed to be 100 per cent focused all the time. I’m really pleased to have finished, and really enjoyed the challenge, but I did find it tough.
“Finishing seventh in the morning qualifying enduro was great. It put me in a good position for the start of the Hell’s Gate main race. I didn’t have too many problems in the main race and my bike was great, but it was hard. I pushed as much as I could, and was in fifth for much of the race, but towards the end I was feeling tired. Riding at night was challenging because the terrain was so slippery. To reach the top of Hell’s Peak was a real relief.”
Hell’s Gate ‘09
1. Taddy Blazusiak (KTM); 2. Alessandro Botturi (KTM); 3. Dougie Lampkin (Beta); 4. Graham Jarvis (Sherco); 5. Tom Sagar (Husaberg); 6. Andreas Lettenbichler (BMW Motorrad Motorsport); 7. Piero Sembenini (Gas Gas).

ROLLS-ROYCE PRODUCT UPDATE TO MODEL YEAR 2009
16.02.2009
• Press Release
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is pleased to announce details of a product update to the 2009 model year Phantom and Phantom Extended Wheelbase. Building on a successful sales year in 2008, the phased introduction of a number of subtle model year enhancements will reinforce Phantom’s position as the pinnacle product of the super luxury segment.

Harmonising the front appearance of the car with that of the Phantom Drophead Coupé and Phantom Coupé, a new streamlined front bumper has been designed and integrated with a shallower grille, finished in stainless steel.

Other new exterior features include LED door handle illumination and the fitting of 21-inch cast aluminum wheels as standard. Two further wheel options exist, both manufactured in forged alloy and available in either painted or part polished finishes.

Inside, rear passengers will benefit from a new RCA component input which provides auxiliary audio and visual connectivity to the 12-inch monitors mounted within the picnic tables. Further features include new front and rear door cappings with integrated grab handles and new bi-directional double reading lights in the C-pillar provide additional illumination. Rear climate control, volume control and electric window switches are now conveniently repositioned, housed in a wood veneer panel in the door.

Production will commence at Goodwood in the spring.

Language that provides a tax credit for the purchase of a motorcycle has been added to the current economic stimulus bill, the AMA reports. The AMA, working in conjunction with other stakeholders, worked diligently to secure the motorcycle provision within the measure. President Obama is expected to sign the bill into law shortly.

"This inclusive and equitable solution will provide much-needed relief to riders, as well as to those who sell motorcycles," said AMA Vice President for Government Relations Ed Moreland. "When it appeared that motorcycles were going to be overlooked in this bill, the AMA and the Association's members, along with Harley-Davidson and others, took our case straight to Capitol Hill and persuaded lawmakers that this was the right decision."

Notice that AMA got us this break! The article says tax credit - a true credit a deduction? Either way - good news :dance

Nice find Mika

"Language that provides a tax credit for the purchase of a motorcycle"

Such a tax credit is also included for the purchase of a house (not limited to 1st time buyers) and of a car. Also added, an additional solar tax credit.

Our state is removing some state-tax credits, so these Federal ones, will be nice, indeed. And no, Paulbach, these are not a deduction, they are credits against taxes, aka tax credits.

Specifically, motorcycles are included as "qualified vehicles" in Section 1008 of the legislation. Those purchasing a new motorcycle will be able to deduct the sales and excise taxes on their 2009 tax returns. Prior to the actions taken by the AMA and others, the deductions only applied to the purchase of a new car or light truck.

Does a credit = a deduction? Looks like a closer read of Section 1008 is in order.

What I read somewhere else like NY Times online a few days ago said there are tax credits. The reading of Section 1008 discusses the ability to "deduct the sales and excise taxes...", which is different than a tax credit based on the purchase price of an article, up to a cap.

Changing the subject, I'm looking forward to AMA vintage days. I always liked the looks of the BSA 650 Spitfire; particularly that gas tank.

Nice Victor! We participate in a vintage ride along the Missouri here every year. One fellow, an englishman living in Canada, rode a 441 powered cafe special. How often do you see a streetbike that you can pick up the rear wheel by the seat rail with one hand? It was a sweet little bike, and sounded great!
