Yesterday I witnessed a rider who had just gone down at an intersection with a stop light. He was just starting to move around and get himself up. I stopped, helped him get his bike upright and off the road Not a BMW). Since his bike was not capable of being ridden due to a broken clutch, we pushed it into a restaurant parking lot. I offered to take him to his place of business where he could pick up his truck and trailer.

What was interesting were the things that he revealed. It made me think and I am writing this because I wonder how many of us have done some of the same things:

1. He was not injured other than some road rash on his arm.
2. He kept saying how embarrassed he was.
3. He said he just got too much front brake.
4. He had no time to let off the brake, he was just down.
5. My rear brake was not working correctly, that is why I was using the front brake.
6. My tires are really old and I probably should have replaced them.
7. I don’t ride this bike very often.
8. I should have been wearing my jacket (he was wearing heavy duty coveralls, and short sleeves) and he was wearing his helmet.

At least this fellow recognized and acknowledged what he should have been doing and what was proper. Fortunately this was a minor wreck, but it could have been another story. How many times have any of us been guilty of doing some of these same things, i.e. I’m just going to run down to the corner store, etc?
