I took my 2002 1150RT transmission off at 43,000 miles just to lube the splines. Even though the bike was shifting well, the splines were 95% gone and probably would have failed on my next long trip. I didn't have the skills or tools to check for mis-alignment, so I simply replaced the clutch, input shaft and shaft bearing plus slathered the splines with Moly-60. The plan was to re-evaluate the splines at 10,000 miles.
Well, I just pulled the tranny at 10,000 miles and sure enough, the new splines looked dry. Had reddish fretting corrosion and early wear in the same pattern as before. I may be able to prolong the inevitable by yearly lubes, but most likely I'm on schedule for another failure in the next 30,000 - 40,000 miles unless I can correct the alignment problem. I still don't have the skills to do this and I'm not sure it's worth the expense of having it done by a shop without some guarantee it would solve the problem.
Any suggestions out there?
