Is there a easier way to change the air filter on a 86 K100Rt than what is in the Clymer Manual. I currently have the gas tank off and some of the fairing for other maintenance and the only other thing I can think to change or clean is the air filter.

None I've ever encountered... it is a PITA...

unless that air filter has around 50+K on it, or has been ridden in especially dusty conditions, it probably does not need changing.

I simply lift the back portion of the gas tank high enough to wedge a 2x4 under the gas tank above the tool case box. Of course the engine guard, knee pad and lower right tupperware must come off as well. Once I clued into the fact that the filter is the widest section of the enclosure, it is not that difficult to lift the top part of the case, lift the old one out and replace with the new one. I've done this three times and have never had to remove the gas tank but if I did, I'm certain that would make the job even easier.

Upon closer inspection I can see how the filter will slip out once I take off a little more plastic.
I had purchased this bike about a year ago with 135000 miles on it and have not been doing much riding but I have been working my way through all types of maintenance. My latest venture was trying to fix the heated handle grips which I finally tracked down the problem and fixed that. Have also changed fuel pump screen, fuel filter, spline lube, rebuilt the works shock, new tires, I am anxious to be ready for spring and some camping once the Michigan winter is over.
thanks guys.
