Yesterday I was coming home after getting some service work done. I got caught is rush hour traffic. A cruiser pulled up behind me. For six blocks I had to listen to this jacka$$ blip his throttle. Do Harleys die if you don't blip the throttle? Can't they just idle?

It's not the bike that will die, but the rider's hands will go numb from the vibration at idle if they don't keep flexing their wrist and "blipping" the throttle... Trust me:jester

Ya forgot the main reason. Its a nervous tick, most commonly associated with having a little weeny.

I pull along side and tell them that Loctite will keep the idle screw from vibrating out again. :D

A year ago I had one pull up beside me at a stop light. It was a short city ride and therefore I did not use earplugs. Yes he blipped his throttle and really cranked it when the light turned green making his left turn as I went straight. That was a Sunday evening. By the following Friday, my left ear stopped ringing. If someone can damage my ears with their machine, even if they were wearing earplugs, what must they be doing to their own hearing? It has to be rather long term and devastating.

I used to have a beat up '76 KD 175 that you had to constantly play with the throttle to keep running. Maybe that was the guy who bought my dirtbike, and he just hasn't broken the habit..............:D

Now that you mention "blipping" the throttle I came to realize that I never blip my BMW when stopped but do blip my Sportster's throttle. It must be a V-twin thing. I will try to forgo "blipping" in the future but old habits die hard and I'm not about to undergo therapy at my age coupled with associated medical costs.
Besides I'd rather be riding than spending time on a therapists couch.

To each their own I guess. A better motor does not need to be blipped.

Enjoy your ride.

I'm disappointed...Nobody caught my Pascal Picotte reference.

By the way, I blip the throttle in my Mustang, but it's only to kick it down from fast idle after she's warmed up.

Don't worry; he was actually referring to Aprilias, MVs, and Bimotas. :)

I guess if you ride a K75 or an R1100RT or an R1150R than a Ducati would seem like "exotic european hardware". :brow It's just a nice motorcycle to me. :nyah

Keeps that motor REAL warm, too, perhaps even overheated in traffic.

More fuel burned equals more heat, especially relevant to aircooled engines.
