View Full Version : K75 Bar Swap???

I've been toying with the idea of taking the original bars off my K75, and putting on a set of S bars or maybe a set of straight(er) bars. Probably would put some new bar end mirrors on too.
Would make it kind of a more aggresive naked bike.
Anyone have any experience with this?
Thoughts? Ideas? Pics?

They will fit.. and seem to also fit what you're looking for. OD is the same, ID is different though which matters for the bar end weights and your bar end mirrors.
Plenty of them around.

Don't know if I want to trade. If I get them on and don't like it, I'd probably want to change back right away.

As part of maybe doing this bar swap, I was thinking of putting new grips on.
Is it possible to remove the old grips without damaging/destroying the existing heating pads?

Assume that your talking about BMW OEM heated grips. I was told by my local dealer that it was possible to change out the rubber grip portion of the heated grips if one was VERY carefull with a scaple and rolled the grip off after cutting. When the factory puts these together they glue the grip to the very thin and fragle heating element (wish they would have mentioned that part) so...naturaly I destroyed mine. Good luck if you try, perhaps your surgical skills are better than mine. :banghead

Yes you can remove the 'grips'....the whole unit, including the heating element, as a 'unit'. That is how they are sold, slide right onto your bars. They come off easily, but for separating the rubber outside from the heating element portion.....see above. After 100k, mine began 'separating' on their own, I just replaced them with new...

They are nominally 22mm, which is .866" I have measured .866" and .870" with the same mic. (no, it didn't come from Harbor Freight) Both were factory bars. Not being a bare metal measurement, the difference could attributed to paint thickness. Just for fun, I measured a Japanese bar, and it was exactly .875".
I am giving some thought to putting a Superbike bar on my K75. It is pretty much between the C and S bars in height.
I am presently using the original K75/2 bars, which are essentially LT bars. I am too tall for them, but they might suit a shorter rider. Anyone wants to trade for C bars, holler.

Actually, the superbike bar is exactly what I was looking at myself.

You'll probably find it difficult to get the controls on without modifying them.

I've got 5 sets of k75 bars. They measure from .866" to .877". C bars S bars RT bars. Probably just a difference in paint thickness. They are all used and had had stock controls on them at one time.
I don't see why there would be any problem fitting the controls.

I'm doing a bar swap GT Touring style. I noticed the brake hose from the master cylinder to the center of the steering stem is quite short and inflexible. Where can I get a hose that is a bit longer?

Do you think the .005 to .009" larger diameter of the .875" bars will be a problem?

You may be able to pursuade the lever perches on, but the throttle tube may be too tight. If I was trying to put a 7/8 bar on a BMW, I'd measure the O.D. of the bar I wanted to use, and the I.D. of the throttle tube before I bought the bar.

Just measured a K75 throttle tube that I had laying around .878" I.D..
Works fine on a K75C bar that measures .877" on the paint.
So make sure the aftermarket bars are less than .878".

Thinking these are a good option for replacing the existing ones when I do the bar swap.
What say you?

I bought a BikeMaster tubular handle bar and just sanded off the paint and it all went together very slick.
Where to get a longer brake hose from the master cylinder to the sterring stem connection????

I was hoping the brake hose from a RT would be long enough. Anyone know?
