Sometime last night, my RT was stolen.
The bike is a 2004 Titan Gray RT. The plate is CA 16P7219 and the VIN# WB10499A74ZE91267.
The bike has a Cee Bailey windscreen, gadgetguy GPS mount and reflectorized cases. The cases have a MOA sticker on the right side and an advrider sticker on the left side.
The bike was stolen in Sunnyvale and the agency handling the theft is Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety.
If you should see or hear of anything, you can reach Sunnyvale PD at (408)730-7100. The case number is 04-8268. The officer handling the case is T. Drago #18.
Thanks,
Ian

Ian, I'm sure that I speak for most everyone when I offer my condolences. Time to sit back, have a beer and think of all the good times that you two had together. Insurance is a beautiful thing, but it doesn't do much to subdue the feelings that you'd still probably like to shoot the SOB that stole your bike.
Good Luck

Truly. That sucks. Insurance is a good thing. The other thing you may want to do is let the local shops know as well. Plus if you are an AMA member they will list it as well.
have you posted it to IBMWR mailer or any other place?

I've posted to bmwsporttouring, i=bmw, moa, advrider,
several mailing lists and CalBMW, San Jose BMW, Santa Cruz
and Marin BMW (all the local dealers).
I've talked to my neighbors (didn't see or hear anything).
You know, it's not the insurance but the time. It was
just getting broken in, all the little goodies that were on
it and so forth. Not to mention, the 12K service I had done just
before Spokane. Oh, and I'll probably see a rate hike because
of this too.
In case you couldn't tell. I'm just a tad bit pissed off.
I guess the bright side is that I didn't get a new seat in
Spokane or that'd be another $400 gone :D

Too bad about your bike. There is a very active market for stolen bikes going out on ships headed overseas. Here in the south, I have a friend who had his bike recovered in the port of Miami with about 150 other motorcycles. It may very well be that the West Coast has this problem as well.

The overseas aspect is all too possible.
1> legal titlework easily bypassed
2> BMW MC community too close to sell, chopshop etc.
3> overseas shipping proximity.
sad scene, sux big <<<)))

Mostly good news.
The bike was recovered today and I've picked it up from
the tow yard.
For the most part, it's in one piece though it looks like it
was ridden hard. All the locks are damaged and the cases
are missing. There's some cosmetic damage too. No broken
plastic, etc.
One of two suspects is in custody...

Shouldn't be too much of an argument. Bike had a major
service done just before Spokane.

Ian, Glad to hear that you got your bike back! The "suspect" that they have... juvie perhaps? Your insurance will be paying you and then going after this clown for the $$$ for repairs. Keep us posted. I'm thinking about going out and buying a better lock for my bike for when it's sitting in the open carport here at the apartment. THe Kyrptonite "NEW YORK" chain is nearly imposible to cut without serious powertools.. just a thought.

Maybe I am naive, but I usually am not worried where I park my bike. I have no lock, and there are places where you can actually leave the key in the ignition, though out of habit I always take it with me.

ian - glad to hear you got her back and a potential perp is in lockup.
what were the circumstances of the theft? at the mall? in front of a store? from your apartment complex? from your garage? down at dish dash having a lamb kabob? geeking out at fry's?
this is a good learning opportunity for most of us.

Glad you got it back. Wouldn't it be nice to spend 10 minutes alone with the perp?

You skeer me :D You know too much about my 'hood...
I think the real learning (for me) is that I will no longer just
lock it but lock it too something when it's parked at home.

Is theft a regular occurance in your neighborhood? If so I would move..... or get a pitbull and a 357 or any other large calibur handgun to protect your investments. The thieves down here in the South know damn well their asses may get killed if they pick the wrong house to rob or burglarize.:nra
Glad your bike is back and hope you get it repaired as new.

i agree with ironhorse, violence is the solution. im licking my chops waiting for the ban on assault weapons to expire this coming september. wuhoo! then i get a fully automatic rifle with a 30 round clip and a grenade launcher mounted underneath. then, and only then, will i truly be safe from criminals, the government, and the liberals in my neighborhood.
in the meantime, im rigging my motorcycle to explode if anyone but me touches it. now let's see, is it the red wire or the green wire that i shouldnt....

Violence is not the solution! Homeowners who have handguns or any other form of protection from various crimes are better protected to take things into their own hands if the law cannot get there quickly enough to apprehend the perp. I would not want anyone to just shoot someone just because they have a gun, but if the perp knows you may have one it is a deterent to take that chance.
Anyway, all my AK 47,s and AR15,s are pre-ban and are locked and loaded! Watch out for the land mines in my driveway.:brow
P.S. watch out for the trip wire by the mailbox!:nra
The key to my bike stays in the switch.

I thought the thread was about poor Ian, who had his bike stolen. As soon as someone (me?) mentions a gun, the anti-gun sarcasm and rehtoric start up. If someone REALLY wants to get into a gun debate, I'm all for it... but is that really what is needed on THIS site?? I'm a NRA life member but I try to keep that side of things a bit subdued to keep the general peace. Save it for the next rally where we can have the discussion over a few beers.

Getting back to the original thread.....how was the bike secured, what did they do to get it, and how did they get it started etc. Any info that can be passed along might help some of us escape such an ordeal. Glad to hear that you got your bike back. :D

I feel your pain! Went through the same thing a few years back. A friend of a friend lived on , shall we say, the dark side of things. I offered a big fat cash reward to get my bike back, no questions asked. After a week, he came back after finding the bike. Told me to keep the money and not mess with these guys. Bike ended up being parted out. The big money for the bad guys is in the plastic. High value parts w/o serial #s. My mistake was that although the bike was cabled, it was not attached to anything solid. Looking at the tracks after the theft, it looked like they backed up a truck of some sort to the bike and just picked it up. Out of sight is the best preventative step toward protecting your stuff. Not to get into the fray of the gun debate, but I had the experience of being held up in my own home. I walked into a burglary and to my dismay, the first thing the bastard (who by the way was wearing my Hein Gericke) had found was my automatic pistol. I bailed out the front door. Tried to run him down with my truck but he ducked between two houses. He was caught eventually, 19 year old w/22 priors. I now live in a much nicer neighborhood:p

Ian, I have one question. Was the steering locked when it was stolen? Just wondering since I've gotten into that habit and just wondering if that is effective or not. Glad you got your ride back and very glad they have the *&^%&*^s in custody!

Yes. But. Once the ignition is punched, that lock is no longer functional.
Disk lock (of good quality) and lock it to something.
