View Full Version : BMW dealer T shirt rant

I travel quite a bit. Whenever I have time I stop by the local BMW dealer to check out there shop & grab a "Acme BMW motorcycles of ?ville" T shirt. I am simply amazed at how many dealers do not offer a shop shirt.
We are down to business casual, from the suit & tie of a few years ago, but I still go as casual as possible outside the office. If I am not in the office or on a bike I will be in shorts & a BMW motorcycle T-shirt.
I had to work at the IMS show in NY last weekend. Amazing crowd, very busy. I stuck around for a few days afterward to go to a museum or two. Tuesday morning I took a cab over to BMW of Manhattan to look around and grab a T shirt. I called first to make sure they had them in stock, but went right to their "boutique" voice mail. I just decided to chance it and go.
Nice store. Same building as the car dealership. Good selection of BMW merchandise, but seemed like almost no aftermarket stuff. The girl behind the counter, upon request, looked through a box of T shirts under the parts counter and came up with 1 BMW Manhattan shirt, unfortunately it was too small. So I had to leave empty handed.
I stopped on my way out to take a look at the new 450. A sales manager type lady asked from accross the room "Dreaming?" which I took as a little offensive. Perhaps I did not look like her typical Manhattan customer as I was dressed in clothing for exploring the city that day. I'm sure they get a lot of tire kickers in there, but they should not judge a book by its cover. I have bought 4 new BMWs from the same dealer in the last 4 years. Not saying I'm special, but I think most BMW dealers would take as many customers like me as they can get.
I told her I was really after a BMW of Manhattan T shirt and was disapointed that they did not have any. Her reply was thet they were like the corporate store and BMW USA looked down upon merchandise such as dealer branded T shirts.
I am not certain if she is full of crap or BMW is that horribly short sighted. I know for a fact that the most profitable item in HD dealers country-wide is their T shirts.
BMW wants its dealers to be these one brand boutique shops even if they are in an area that is capable on only selling a few hundered bikes a year. Do the math, how can they stay open? Half the people buy their parts and accesssories on line and many do their own service. Do you think the dealers can stay open on bike sales? No way.
BMW of Manhattan made zero profit dollars on me even though I had spent $20 in cab fare getting there and back. They could have had some shirts made for $5 and I would have gladly paid $20 or even $25 (it is NYC!) That is awesome GP%, better than anything else in their store and something everyone who walks in the door can afford. Yes, selling a bike is more profit dollars, but you have a huge GP in the T shirts & done right I bet a large shop in a metro area can make as much $ on T shirts as they do on new units.
Please keep in mind there are only about 32 or so BMW motorcycles sold on an average day nationwide.
BTW Irv Seaver BMW of Orange CA has very nice T shirts.

We also went to BMW of Manhattan while we were down there for a weekend. This was about a year ago, when BMW took the original F650gs (the single) off the market. I went down there on a lark to see if they had a leftover, or perhaps a used one. The sales guy pointed me to a used R1150gs and left the showroom! No help at all.
I wound up falling in love with an old r90/6 anyway, but MaxBMW in Albany is getting all my business for parts and whatnot. Don't know if they have shirts though.

Is it me or is there HD tshirt envy going on here?
I think I have more BMW Tshirts than I have HD shirts. I like to get them because they are a bit harder to find.
Engle Motors in Kansas City usually has dealer T-Shirts on hand.
Last year I was given a nice T-shirt from Twin City BMW in Savoy Il.

I seldom buy T-shirts of any sort. I have too many T-shirts now; I get them free from work and don't need to buy more. Plus I don't really agree with the concept of me paying for their advertising. If they want to give me a shirt to wear and pay me to do so, I'll think about it. :thumb

I too like collecting the dealer T-shirts including the freebie ones I get at my Plano, TX dealer. After you shell out 20 grand for a new RT they might throw one in for appreciation. I also like getting ones from the dealers I've ridden to from Sierra BMW in Sparks, NV to Big Sky BMW in Missoula.
That Manhattan dealer is kind of an oddity in that both the bike and car dealer under that one roof is indeed corporate owned. According to my friend who lives in manhatten, they are more inclined to let you take their bikes out on a demo ride than most of the independent dealers so hopefully that fares better than the lack of souvenirs.

I've also had trouble finding BMW t-shirts at dealers, including in Germany of all places. I joined the wife who was on a conference about 2 years ago, stopped at a Berlin BMW dealer just to try to find a Berlin BMW shirt- no luck. I did find and purchase a shirt from a Berlin HD dealer..well not a bike dealer but a merchandise dealer. HD t-shirt envy, yep, they make some great stuff. I have several HD shirts and no Harley to go with them. One of the most world wide recognized brands, up there with Coke and Nike. And if / when you do find anything from BMW its $$$ and quite often no style. Disappointing.

In my closet its no contest. I have six Harley shirts to every BMW shirt. But thats because I've owned Harley's for 23 years, and I've only owned BMW's for 2 1/2 years. When I wear one of my Harley Shirts, I do as I please and eat what I please. When I wear a BMW shirt, I'm very careful, because they are much harder to come by.

Just bought a new BMW from Victory in Chandler,AZ. No shirt or hat was offered after the deal and check. I then asked for one. Answer--maybe next time???? Go figure! First motorcycle I have ever bought where a small gift of appreciation was not offered. I asked only because I thought they had forgotten.

BMW jealously gaurd the right to use the roundel. BMW dealers are actually forbidden from using it except in certain proscribed ways. Dealers here will do T-shirts, but occasionally BMW will crack down. European dealers are really cracked down on and I have never found anything there. I wish BMW could market like harley...sigh.

A bit sensitive, are we? I've had stuff like that happen to me and I interpret it more like a friendlier way of breaking the ice. Once a car salesman's greeting to me was "Looking, or buying?" and my quick reply was, "Looking to buy." Life is too short. :dance

Obviously (to us), BMW is a cult all its own just like Harley.
But apparently, the Germans who run the company don't realize that - or care. And they don't seem to like being told how to market in the U.S.
If they'd lighten up and encourage their dealers to do T-shirts, hats, and the like (and give 'em away with each new bike), they'd increase their brand loyalty - along with market share.

BMW is afraid local dealer merchandise will cut into their premium price clothing and degrade the prestige of the brand. I love local wear. It's like the "Hard Rock" stuff from the eighties. They are also good conversation starters. I love to buy a variety of souvenirs as I travel, whether it is a hat, t-shirt, or sweat shirt. I picked up a cool BMW of Orlando fleece last week. I needed it too! Cold weather.

your right about premium price. last year I traveled to Linden N.J. to purchase my new to me RT. After buying the bike I stopped by the local BMW shop to pick up some filters and gaskets. The BMW dealer in HK is the same. Cars & bikes together. They have a few things we can not get over here though, mostly BMW helmets.
I did find some cool little Z3 Coupe toys they had in the car department. Since I am a big fan of the shoe I bought all they had.

Still no BMW of HK T-shirts though. How cool would that be?
Made friends with one of the guys that works there a few years back. We kept in touch for a while & he always asked me to go for a ride, but I was always freaked about driving on the left. No worries doing it in a car as you have a constant reminder to keep the passesnger seat in the gutter, but for me I would always be freaked out I would go to the right when meeting another vehicle.

T-shirts?
From my dealer I was able to purchase a Dickies work shirt with not only the dealer's name on it but also logos for Remus, Touratech, Castrol, and Metzeler.
This is all on the front and sleeves. On the back: "sandiabmwmotorcycles.com
They had them in grey, white, and black.

Awhile back when I had a Sportster, I worked in Sales which entailed travelling. I'd stop in on HD dealerships in major cites/towns to pick up a T-shirt and also occasionally buy one for a production guy from my company who would help me out.
When I got my R1200C I tried the same at a few Beemer dealerships then soon lost interest as it'd be rare I'd find anything.
I ended up w/ a decent number BMW T-shirts from attending events but didn't pay for many. Now I have too many motorcycle t-shirts so I ain't buyin' any ... unless it's something really unique or historic. Last one I bought was to commemorate the great Valentino Rossi at the inaugural IndyGP.

A couple of weeks ago I was visiting a friend on the New Hampshire seacoast and stopped in at MAX for a t-shirt. I pulled in the parking lot and realized the lights were out. I went to the door to check the hours and realized that I was about 30 minutes past closing, better luck next time…
As I returned to the car an employee came out another door and asked if he could be of assistance. I said hi and told him I was visiting from out of town and was just going to stop and visit the dealer, maybe pick up a t-shirt. The next thing I know, the lights were on, my wife and our friends were looking over the new and used bikes and the great selection of accessories and gear. We were joyfully greeted by a couple of employees that were working late. Had some great conversation and picked up a couple of new MAX T-shirts and a great sweatshirt. Fantastic folks and a nice dealership!

I can't let this pass me by without a comment.
Three yrs. ago, I was visiting Germany and spent a week in Lenngries, Bavaria, Germany. Mind you, I was not an owner of a BMW at that time but had owned a few Moto Guzzi's in the past. I spoke with the owner in MY english and he was very pleasant. I bought a t-shirt and my brother in law bought one as well.
1 1/2 yrs ago, I bought my first BMW. The dealer, Mischler's BMW in Beaver Dam Wi, [U]gave[U] me a t-shirt in gratuity for buying a bike from them. I bought a second bike from them in spring 2008 in part because I wanted a different style of bike and was more than satisfied with their method of conducting business.
On a trip to the southwest this past spring, I bought a t-shirt from BMW of Las Vegas while waiting for an oil change. Had a nice conversation with the service mgr. While visiting Albuquerque, N.M. on the same trip, I bnought another t-shirt from them. I bought one last fall in Green Bay, Wi. at Nick's BMW. Again, had a nice visit with the dealer.
I guess my opinion is; if they sell or give you a shirt, it's to their benifit and adds to your collection. If they don't haver one for sale, it's not going to advertise their business. So, no shirt, no free pro-mo. I just like collecting them.

This thread is providing some humor and some good points. So not sure what it is I offer with this comment, but I will say, when I travel I like to get something in the location that can only be found at that location. Often times the only thing that can be found that speaks of the location is (believe it or not) a HARLEY DAVIDSON T-shirt. So here I ride a BMW but wear HD shirts, how stupid is that?

A friend owned a dive shop some years ago. He told me that at the time his highest profit items were T-shirts. Maybe these dealers are missing out on an easy way to make some money.
I really like the one I bought from Franks BMW at the second Vermont Rally. It appears that they took a "plain jane" BMW factory shirt and added a local touch to the back complete with a quote in German. I also bought the awful to me MOA shirt at the rally. No offense to those behind that MOA shirt, but it's hardly been worn.

RE: "Acme BMW motorcycles of ?ville" T shirt. I am simply amazed at how many dealers do not offer a shop shirt.
Interesting read. I can't agree with you more. I can't believe how shortsighted BMW is on this point. I have an RT and don't own one of their cars, and that said, I am not interested in wearing a hat or T-shirt that simply says BMW. After looking really hard, I found a BMW cap, that actually said BMW Motorcycles. It was available in ONE color - BLACK. Its nice, but I"m shocked. I don't want a hat that reads MOTORAD. People don't know what a MOTORAD is.... Their T-Shirts however, for the most part, are terrible, and more times than not, it's a GS t-shirt.
I came from the Harley world and I used to by a T-shirt often at stores I visited, and they were always good looking. They weren't bike specific, but rather, the brand. Harley makes 1/3 of profits on merchandise, 1/3 on accessories, and another third on their bikes.
I live in South Florida, and frankly, one has to be on the alert to find / see other BMW bikes. I simply want a BMW (logo) Motorcycle T-Shirt that says exactly that, in LARGE, and in various colors. I have only 1 or 2 BMW T-shirts of their vintage heritage.
I am shocked and wished that BMW would get off of their high horse.

This suggests some of the reasons that I rarely wear a BMW shirt or cap...I prefer to wear shirts/caps from rallies and the MOA. They represent folks that make a positive contribution to my riding experience. I really enjoy riding BMWs, but the local club members and volunteers donate their time and effort to enhance the experience and I would rather advertise for them. Just my thoughts...not quite $.02 worth. :dunno

I was in the shop in Charlotte,N.C. and ask as I have many times why no Beemer shirts. the Owner (Mark) happened to hear me and ask what kind of T-shirt I wanted. I won a Bobs BMW baseball cap at a door prize whilst attending the fingers lake rally. I got given a MAX BMW T shirt from the NH store for having to wait 5 hours for my bike back from service and just this last weekend treated myself to MAX BMW T shirt from the Troy garage as I had ridden 2550 miles in 6 days. So there out there guys, just need to look for em.

i dunno, i kinda like the style of this beemer shirt. Iron Horse in Tucson is one of the few places you can find it
I bought two of those shirts - one white and one black. I wear the black one all the time, and gave the white one to my barber, who chose a Road King over a LT a couple years back.

I see lots of shirts in Sierra BMW.
I did a search on their site also.

I just looked at the 45 shirts at Sierra - and they all look like the typical corporate shirt. For the most part, they're lame. They're the same ones that other dealers have. Seriously, I can't imagine wearing a t-shirt with a boxer motor on it. The boxer motor is no V-Twin. And I don't want a GS, S or whatever other bike that I don't have on my shirt, and doubt that I'd even wear one with an RT on it. Where are the slogans with a little edge on them. There just seems to be a total lack of imagination. I want a shirt that says I've been to the dealer in Las Vegas, and I don't want it to just say BMW. It's gotta read BMW Motorcycle - not BMW Motorrad.
The way Harley does it is that they do the fronts of all their shirts, and basically leaves the backs up to the local dealer after the design has been blessed. What determines if they sell or not is how good the design is. They sell millions. Now compare how many BMW t-shirts you see. Almost none.
I saw a billboard sign in Milwaukee at the 105th birthday of Harley Davidson. It was great and VERY catchy. It read
Happy 105th Harley Davidson. We called to congratulate you, but you probably couldn't hear us....
BMW (logo) Motorcycle
Now if I had that on a t-shirt on the back, I'd wear it....

I learned something about BMW T-shirts a few weeks ago. I was in the shop in Charlotte,N.C. and ask as I have many times why no Beemer shirts. the Owner (Mark) happened to hear me and ask what kind of T-shirt I wanted. I told him, the kind with the shop name and BMW design on it. He said...Oh we have those in the back, their called shop shirts :scratch so in the future when I'm in a different shop, I will ask for a shop shirt.
This just shows how clueless some of the dealers are that they would hide a sought after product, and them call them something that they are not. The real truth is that BMW does not approve anything with their logo on it that doesn't come from corporate - so these dealers have to stuff them in the back.

Last year, I picked up a Bob's BMW "Ultimate Bike Raffle" limited edition T-shirt for a mere 100 bucks. (It came with 3 raffle tickets.) I fully plan to do it again this year, its for a good cause. ;)
