I was going to buy some NGK 7912 spark plugs today at Advance Auto. All the plugs that they had in stock did not have the little metal tip that screws onto the end. I thought that this was a necessary part of plug. Am I wrong?

I once bought a 87 K100LT and did not follow my iron clad rule, replace the spark plugs. The bike ran great. After 10k miles I bought a set of NGKs, guess what? NGKs were in the bike without the tips. I robed 2 tips from old lawn mower plugs (new lawn mower plugs don't have removable tips) and a buddy had 2.

If you have Bosch plugs in the bike use the tips from them. I do like the NGKs better than the Bosch plugs.

Many Japanese bikes do not require the tips. Some NGK plugs have the screw on tips,

Bosch's plugs for the Ks have the terminal nut crimped on, and for good reason; the thread-on nuts tend to loosen and sometimes get stuck in the plug caps. If you're going to use the NGKs, find some "Gridfix", made by Loctite and put a bit on the threads. Gridfix is expensive, but a bottle lasts a long time. You can find it in good auto parts stores.

When I bought my NGKs at the local Kaw/Honda dealer, I asked about the lack of tips and he went out back and found a box of tips and supplied me with the three I needed for my K75S.
