The media cracks me up sometimes. They take a (myopic) look at the population of one city in the US, (New York) and extrapolate that to the rest of the country as nailed down fact.
I never head of an iPod before reading this article: iPod Nation (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5457432/site/newsweek/)
Since most of us live someplace other than London or New York, I'm wondering how many of us are using this device.

ipods are too big and clunky, [EDIT: FOR ME. i dont want anything bigger than a USB jump drive in my pocket.] and i dont need all that music with me. i use a 128MB combo mp3 player/jump drive for music/random file transfers. very tiny, holds enough songs to keep me amused for a while.
i dont need music very often, im happy to sit in silence/ambient noise.
edited to avoid flames regarding how ipods arent clunky/theyre elegant, etc.

Ipod's are anything but big and clunky compared to other portable music devices. In fact Ipod's fit pretty comfortably in your shirt pocket. Right now I have about 25 gigs of music in my pod, approx 14 days or over 250 complete albums or cd's. I also use the ipod to store digital pictures if I'm on the road and I need room on my camera. They are miniature hard drives and can be uses for any data storage purposes.. In addtion all of my ipod music is synch'd to my computer in the office and runs on the itunes program attached to some kick ass speakers. On the bike I use noise cancelling Shure earbuds for the ultimate in fidelity.

I don't listen to music often .... never have. The music issue always astounded my friends in high school -- I didn't listen to much of anything, and no one could believe I didn't "need" it. Still don't. I have a few tunes that are tied to one person, but the heart must be there to truly enjoy it. Usually the sounds of the world around me are quite enough for my ears (typically, I'm cycling by 6 am). I love the "sound of silence".:bliss

I love my Ipod, but like most users, I'd like to smack the person that decided to put a whimpy 8 hour battery in it. Needless to say, my first accessory was Belkin's AA battery piggybacker. Out of all the digital music devices available, it seems Apple presents the most compact, user-friendly unit for sale.....even if it DOES have the highest pricetag. Furthermore, kudos to Apple for replacing my Ipod roughly 10 months after I bought it when it froze up (after being dropped-but don't tell them). I brought it into an Apple store, and when the Apple Genius (that's what they call their super-techs) couldn't remedy it's condition, because it was still under it's year warranty, he gave me a new one. I never had such a hassle-free warranty repair in my life.

One of our incoming first-year law students dropped by last week to say he would NEVER own anything but an Apple! The exam program we use doesn't mesh well with Apple, but he was adamant about the ease of use/support services of Apple. He said he might purchase a Dell for use with our exam software only... but would continue to use his Apple for daily use... swears by it.

Time to get out from under that rock, Rick. They've been around for a couple years now and are fairly ubitquitous.

There's a new radio station here in Dallas ("Jack FM- playing what we want to play!") that runs a promo in which they describe their station as "Like an iPod except you don't have to have your kid show you how to use it!"

Shuffle mode rules!
Ok. So you get some dogs. But the real thing I like is hearing
stuff I'd forgotten about. Very, very cool. I put the little remote
thingy on the tank bag so I can skip the boring stuff :D
Silence is good too.

I can just see me shopping in the gadget store in the town where I live. Walking up to the kid on duty, the conversation goes like this:
"Say, can you show me one of those ubiquitous music players?"
"Uh, mister. Don't you know it's crude to use vulgarity in public?"

Right now I have 2064 songs in a 15GB unit. It's only about 1/2 full at this point. Non-Ipod owning people say to me "How can you ever listen to that much music?" The thing is you can't--it's the fact you're carrying around your entire music collection from home that's key!!! And most of the units that are coming out now are 30 and 40GB-over 10,000 songs. Now that's alot of music!

I love my iPod. I've got a 40 gigger, and I've barely scratched the surface of that space. (I've got about 12 gigs on there.)
Sure, it's clunky, if you consider something the size of a deck of cards clunky.
