Why oh why do people not do this on their computers?:banghead
I spent several hours last night on one for a nice couple I know of.
I offered, mostly because I hate to see people being taken by business' that do such things. I arrived there around 8pm, and we got to work.
one is somewhat computer savvy, but the other is not.
She said so because she uses one at work. I ride a motorcycle often, but I am not sure I can build one from scratch. I think if she knew plenty, I wouldn't be there.:ha
Their anti-virus had expired, so I deleted their old antivirus, and went to get a spyware program, as they doubted the one they had. When I searched in Internet Explorer, the links I clicked on took me to different sites, the browser was hiijacked! I downloaded another Internet browser and on we went, but Yahoo looked strange on the new one also. I found a spyware program, downloaded it and ran it and it found around 56 versions of malware on the machine, and removed them. I then downloaded a free antivirus. It wants to do a boot scan and you have to reboot anyway, so I say sure. It found 5 more worms on the hardrive and was still at 23% scanned when I left at 10:30 pm. We are all doomed!

Good job Roy!!!

My bother in law lives in Waukesha, WI., I am in Hales Corners.
He fix's my home computer which i NEVER use, always use my work lap top, and the kids & wife are always down loading junk. I clean up what I can & TRY to keep the Anti virus up to date, but the other in laws just send so much chit it's unbeleiveable!:nono

He don't mind cause I grill him real nice steaks when he comes over to fix it.:buds

But your right, if the computer could be set to shock or jolt the user when this stuff happens, I bet we'd all keep up on them better. A bike will strand you for neglecting it, you can walk away from the computer.

Human nature I guess.:nono

If you pay travel expenses now, or just gas for the airhead (I mean the bike :ha)when it gets warmer, sure.
Otherwise, state yer question and I will do my best here. I am sure we have some other IT <s>geeks</s> technowizards here, much more knowledgeable than I
(although maybe not cheaper)
Truthfully, if I go to Alaska, I may not want to leave.

Try it when we're in the middle of two weeks of temperatures with daily highs below -20 and less than 4 hours of sunlight. There's a saying here that if your family loves you they will visit you in Fairbanks; if they really, really love you then they'll visit in January... no one from my family has been within a 1000 miles of this place in January. Now in the summer this is a piece of paradise!

:clap A pavlovian computer! Why didn't I think of it?
I don't want a computer telling me I am not smart enough to use it though.:ha
I remember one time I was scanning one of the home computers with multiple accounts. The spyware/malware scanner picked up 39 in my wife's account, 16 in my sons, and none in mine. I use Firefox for browsing, they use Internet Explorer.
YMMV

My favorite story is at a trade show; we had one program running a website live, and the other laptop running a power point to the 60 inch plasma behind us. I'm chatting with a customer, and I happen to look up at the Screen behind me, and see LIVE PORN running! I sort of redirected the person I was chatting with, and killed the laptop by shutting excaping out and shutting the lid. I don't think anybody caught a whiff of what was going on...

Turns out it was my female employee's laptop, infected and hijacked to the brim. We had a long talk about the computer was only for work usage, she initally denied it, however she paid for the cost to remove the offending stuff, and got wrote up. She worked a few months more, then quit. After I got the laptop back, sure enough, it had been used for the wrong purpose all over again!

Whatta gal!

I clean up my laptop every chance I get. I suppose I should do the same on my PDA!

My downfall is pictures on my home computer; I like to run a giant slideshow, while I'm working, but know I should slide years of digital pics into a external drive or thumb drive, but want to keep access. The whole lot strains the system!

I do this for a living for a large computer firm that has contracts with government. You would be surprised at what we find on those "government" computers. They can't surf porn as we have a blockage on that and if they do try to get to a porn site, they get a flashing red screen that will not go away, kills their access, and we get an alert right away. Result is we have to remote their PC to kill the Red Screen and allow them access again.

Most of the problems we find on computers tend to be a result of PBKAC.
We keep telling them that the computers are for actual work use, not personal playtoys.

For those that don't know PBKAC means

Problem
Between
Keyboard
And
Chair

:nod. It is not just them. I spent a half an hour talking with one of my buddies and finally I googled the name of what he told me was a windows program and it was malware. The first page had tons of links of how to get rid of it. He tried to make me talk him through it but he had already wasted a half hour of my life.
