I pulled my front wheel to service the brakes, when I did, the speedo drive unit fell off and I wasn't able to see how it should have properly come off/on. Now, I am trying to reinstall the wheel, but can't seem to get the drive unit to properly engage the drive plate. When assembled, I can rotate the speedo units drive tab until it apparently engaged the drive plate tab, yet, when I go to spin the wheel, the drive tab stops rotating. Any help, please?

I'll have to go home and take a look at mine as a a reminder, but I'm almost certain you have it on right. That tab is supposed to be stopped and the drive works from inside spinning the speedo. But as I said, I will have to look at it at home to verify that. The first time I took mine off, I had the same fear, but it went back on the only way I could see that it COULD go back on...and it worked.

Thanks..........Hope your investigation will either tell me as you are thinking that it is right or, tell me what I may have done wrong. If you could, please also see if the tab spins as you spin the wheel. thanks much.

Try looking here http://www.bikebandit.com/bmw-motorcycle-r1150r-2004/o/m234 - if the link doesn't work, try going to Bikebandit.com and look up the oem microfiche for an R1150R and go to the front wheel assembly, it shows the parts sequence blow-up for the speedo drive.

The nylon lugs on the driving gear in the drive unit engage against the metal tabs on the wheel hub. To assemble them together the wheel goes approximately into place between the forks, then the speedo drive unit is inserted into the wheel hub and the axle is pushed through from the right side. The tabs on the speed drive should be located about 90 degrees off from the tabs in the wheel hub.

Sometimes - if ever assembled wrong - the metal tabs on the ring in the wheel hub get bent/pushed inward. Then they fail to engage and drive the lugs on the speedo drive. If so, they can be bent back outward so the are straight and will engage the speedo drive.

Hmmm, I think you've got it. that might explain why the partial engagement.

thanks much!

I think we got it. though the tabs looked to be straight, i did slightly bend them and presto, the drive assembly tab rotates.
Thanks so much. One question however.....though the odometer registers rotation now, the speedo needle still is not moving. Could it be that I am just not getting enough rotation to it on the center stand?
