The Bosch oil filter is made by Champion around $6 in an auto parts store. Champion also makes the Wal Mart Super Tech oil filter for $2 and change. The inner works of these filters are identical as far as I could tell when dissecting the filters.
I ran a Super Tech on my K100LTand I run a Super Tech on my Honda ST1100.
I believe Mahle makes the OEM BMW oil filter.

Their current price is $3.48 per filter.
beemerboneyard.com: one case of 12 on sale for $74.95
rockauto.com: one case of 12 for $41.76

I buy Bosch filters from www.euromotoelectrics.com. 6 pack for $38 delivered. Very fast service and friendly people there.

I usually use one of the higher-grade Purolator filters. The K75 uses the same size as a 3.0 and 3.4 V6 Toyota Truck. So in my garage, I buy the same size filter for all my vehicles. Pretty convenient.

Does the paint on the filter come off in the hot oil?

No the paint does not but a paper sticky label might. Harold in Kansas

The paint is not a problem but some (cheap Fram) that has the black "easy grip" surface on the end is a problem. The black stuff flakes off and makes a mess.

I'm the world's cheapest cheapskate most of the time. But for oil filters, I don't put in much effort. To me, the cost is just too minimal spread over time and mileage to spend time or energy looking for deals. For the same reason, I'm too lazy to try to find a cheaper alternative to OEM. I just buy a few OEMs at a time from whatever online BMW supplier I happen to be buying something else from or pick one or two up at the local dealer when I'm there on other business.
I've had good service and prices from both ASCycles and Beemerboneyard.

The paint hasn't come off any filters I've used so far, of any brand (Bosch or Purolator). There are a few posts on the web warning against Fram filters with the grippy, textured paint on them, but you couldn't fit a filter wrench on them anyway. You do have to watch Purolator though, some filters will have a stick-on label, rather than a painted label. I'm not brave enough to try the durability of the stick-on label in a constant, high-temp oil bath.
Of course, you could use Toyota filters, which are very high quality and about $5 each.

in terms of price, and perceived value (getting OEM level parts rather than something that "fits", but is probably not built to BMW specs)- I'm liking that rockauto link!

Napa 1348 is another filter that works for both my 4Runner and my K75.
Just peel off the stick-on label and you're good to go...

Does anyone here know where to find the Mahle OC-91 filter. Mahle is the OEM and the OC-91 is the number for the filter. I've Googled "Mahle OC-91 oil filter" a number of times and always am directed to CAR parts places. I've asked them a few times and usually get the answer that we sell car parts, not motorcycle parts and we're sorry, but we can't help you.

I cut and pasted the info below from my post on another forum.
For my '85 K100RS, I've switched to the Bosch 72161 Premium Oil Filter. It's painted black, with a removable paper/adhesive label. The paint won't dissolve in the oil sump.
I ordered a case from Rockauto.com:
http://www.rockauto.com/
Their current price is $3.48 per filter.
Bob's BMW (USA dealership) recommends this filter as a direct replacement on their website.
https://store.bobsbmw.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=2007
Bob's price for the Bosch 72161 is $8.95 and they claim their price is $5.00 less than the BMW OEM filter. That makes the Rockauto.com Bosch 72161 about $10.50 less that the BMW OEM filter. This is the best replacement to the expensive OEM filter, I've found, in terms of cost and performance.
Detailed Description (From Bob's BMW link above)
"Use this oil filter as a direct replacement for BMW Oil Filter # 11 42 1 460 845
It fits all K75, K100, K1100 models, & K1200LT, and all Oil-Head (4-Valve) Twins except R1200 RT/ST/GS (the “Hex-Heads”).
Change your oil more frequently (good for your bike) and SAVE money in the process (good for your wallet). Our new Bosch Premium Oil Filter meets or exceeds OEM specs, but costs FIVE Dollars LESS! Bosch is a highly reputable German company that makes OEM parts for most vehicles made in Germany and elsewhere in Europe, including your BMW motorcycle. This unit is a direct replacement for the stock filter and will fit and perform flawlessly in your motorcycle.
Note in the comparison photo that it is slightly taller than the stock filter. This minor difference is irrelevant to the fit and will not interfere even in K models that use a cover plate over the filter housing. The same oil filter wrench you may already have (either the BMW tool or Bob's wrench #OFWR) will also work to remove and install the Bosch filter.
When using the Bosch filter, as with any oil filter, it is still important to perform oil changes at least as often as your factory manual prescribes to insure the long life and optimum performance of your motor. When changing your oil, please also replace the sealing crush washer on the oil drain plug (part # 07119963300 for K models, or # 07119963252 for Oil-Heads). In addition, on K models, the o-ring that seals the filter canister cover should be inspected each time and replaced periodically (part # 11131460425). These parts are not included with oil filters and must be ordered separately.
For motorcycles still under warranty, we recommend continued use of the stock oil filter for the duration of the warranty period. This is not because we feel the stock filter is superior, but rather it is to preclude any possibility of a warranty claim being denied because of the use of an aftermarket oil filter."

The Fram PH6063, made in Austria, is identical to the Mahle OC91. Or used to be.
With Fram, you just can't be sure.
Just be sure they haven't changed the supplier to a bootleg Chinese outfit.

Hi,
The first Fram 6063 I bought, quite a few years ago, was a repackaged Mahle OC-91 filter, made in Austria. The next time I bought one, the filter was painted black and was made in Italy - NOT the same as the OC-91. I've checked a number of Fram 6063 boxes in the past few years and none was the Mahle OC-91 filter.

I just checked on one source, and they are made in Taiwan.

BTW, the K1200S/GT filters which are much shorter than K1200RS, etc., have been replaced in the K1300 bikes with a somewhat longer filter. Hmm?

Funny that you mention that, I've got a 1996 Toyota Tacoma...2.7L motor and it used the same oil filter as my K75s...
I've been using the genuine Toyota filters for a couple years...$4.00 from Conicelli Toyota through their online store.

As a newby to the 85K100, I was wondering, the gaskets that are on the plate around the base of the engine, do they have to be replaced each time you change the filter, or can you use some of the hi-temp silicone around the existing washers?

I usually replace the big O-ring every 2-3 oil changes. IT WILL LEAK if you push your luck (don't ask) Beemerboneyard.com has them and lots of other new stuff at good prices. Don't know about using silicon, never heard of anyone trying it.

I have used the same oring for years. I would check the flatness of the filter cover plate if leaking is occuring. Silicone is not necessary if the cover plate, etc. are ok.

Hi, All,
Should anyone be interested, Frank at mrmrsp191@aol.com has genuine Mahle OC-91 oil filters for sale. His price is $10 or 5 for $40 plus shipping in each case. I have bought some from him. He shipped very quickly and I am pleased with the transaction.
