My current ride is a R100RT and thinking of moving up to a similar but after the R's became fuel injected. Asking: what year was the change? Any bad news on the service history on the system used in the first few years? Would there be any down side to a move to this higher technology? :scratch

Oilheads were '92/'93, right? Those were the first fuel injected boxers. All Airheads were carbed to the end of production.

I'd heard of some surging, possibly early on in the technology. Not sure what fixed it. I believe at some point they went to the dual spark technology which probably helped.

The oilheads overlapped with the last production of the airheads. The first oilheads were in 1994, the last airheads (euro only R80GS Basic models) were 1995 model year (which apparently were still available into 1996).

As this is really a discussion about oilheads, I'm going to move this thread to that location. But depending on how far forward florabunda wants to jump, the hexhead forum maybe an interesting place to look, as well.

From the BMW website.

1996: The last 2-valve boxer comes off the production line

The last model of the classic boxer generation comes off the production line at the Spandau BMW motorcycle plant, the R 80 GS Basic. Thus on December 19th 1996, a chapter of German motorcycle history comes to a close after over 70 years. The final balance sheet: BMW sold 685,850 units of the classic boxer series worldwide since 1923. 467,000 of these had been built in the Spandau plant since 1969.

'95 models were last models sold in USA.

R80GS Basic was never produced to USA specs.
