Back in the summer my RT-P died. It used to cut out at 4000rpm then one night I had to put it on a trailer to get it home. Well now that I finished working on everyone elses stuff I can turn my time back to the RTs problem.
I replaced the coils and Hall sensor and the RID still goes right to the top on the left side. I just pulled the fuel pump and bench tested it. It works but I have no power at the wires going into the pump. I checked the fuse box and see no burnt fuses but I do not know which fuse and relays are responsible for what. I have no owners book since I purchased this RT-P used.
Can someone tell me from left side to right what fuses and relays complete what circuits?
Also does anyone know what I should check next? I would really enjoy the idea of actually riding this bike in 09 after insuring it all last year and not having time to fix it.
Thanks for any help,
Tom

It helps if you put your bike(s)'s info in the member profile, including the year. There is a thread from 12-20-08 about a similar problem that turned out to be a connector corrosion issue. Here is the thread:
BMW MOA > Bike Forums > Oilheads > 2000 R1100R Will Not Start
Also, if you PM me with an email address and the year of your bike, I may have some information on the electrical system that could help you.

Isn't there a relay that activates the fuel pump?

Thats what I was thinking. Turn your key on and see if you can hear the fuel pump come on. it will make a humming sound. this may also sound silly, but check your kill switch, I've made that mistake myself. Good luck Kenny...

Also check the sidestand switch. You can trace its wire and unplug it. Then jumper the two connections in the plug on the harness side to see if the pump comes on. Ot go the other way and test for continuity through the switch when up, and not when down.

no joke on the kill switch thing, even slightly askew it might cause you a problem, it had me scratching my head for a 1/2 hour one day in a parking lot in ohio, guess i bumped it when i got off the bike.

Do the RT-Ps have a relay to let the bike run with the stand down? Could there be a problem in that circuit?

If it is Factory stock, it should not run with the sidestand down. When I removed the stand on my RT for some modification, I disabled that little safety device. :thumb

I have a 2002 R1150RT-P. On mine, you can start the bike with the sidestand down but not put the bike into gear or it will kill the engine.

Then I stand corrected, mine is a RT, not a RTP.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the ideas to check. It has been -20f here the last couple of days so until Duram BMW sends the new fuel filters to me ( I might as well replace them while the tank is apart) I will have to wait to try our these checks you have sent along. This evening I will check the continuity of the side stand switch. I replaced the fuel pump relay with the same numbered one from the horn and it did not make a difference.
I'll let you know what happens.
Thanks,

This one does not have the sidestand over ride. It is a Canadian version from the Montreal Police dept (Laval). It also has the spoked rims.

HI Guy's,
I just put the new fuel filter in the RT, put the tank back on and after cranking it a couple of times it started.
As per the suggestions on this thread I did check the side stand switch and it has continuity when in the up postion every time I tryed it. I checked the relay by removing it and replacing it with the known good one from the horn which has the same part number, no difference. I checked the kill switch and the continuity was good when it was supposed to be.
The fuel pump had power but only briefly. That is when I remembered that with all this fancy computor stuff the cumputor will only let the pump run when it needs fuel. At the time I was not cranking the engine over so it did not need any more fuel pressure. I had just bought a new fuel fiter since I had the tank apart and at this time installed it while I was reinstalling the pump assembly in the tank.
I did the old mechanics test on the filter and blew through it. That was easy on the new one but boy did I ever have to put some pressure to blow through the old one. Once I assembled everything I cranked it over a couple of times and it fired up. I put my 18 inch industrial fan in front of it on high speed and ran it up for about 15 imnutes varying between 2500 rpm and the 4000 rpm that initially showed when I started this problem. The bike has 68902 km (about 40,000 Miles) on it and who would know if the filter had ever been replaced before. When I bought it it was just over 52,000km (30,000 Miles).
So my conclusion is that the partially plugged filter could have caused the computor to shut down the system due to the lack of fuel pressure avialable.
Does this sound probable??????
Thanks to everyone who has helped out,

Yup sounds very plausible. No gas to engine, engine gets upset and quits. Computer senses fuel pressure and shuts pump as long as pressure is there.
Go ride the bike now.

IMHO not such a good idea.
