:scratch My original battery gave up the ghost after 36K and I have ordered a Westco sealed battery to replace it. While preparing to install it today I noticed the Clymer BMW manual says if installing a maintenance-free gel battery it "requires initial services by the dealership." The battery came charged, so I'm wondering what this means. I don't want to connect the new battery and discover later that I have inadvertantly done some kind of damage. I would appreciate any input on this. Thanks in advance!

No idea what Clymer has in mind, but just install it. There is no real difference between that AGM Wesco and a flooded battery as far as use and charging.

The Westco battery is *not* a gel battery, it is an (A)bsorbed (G)lass (M)at battery. AGM batteries are chemically identical to traditional flooded cell batteries just without most of the liquid. Put it in and don't worry about it.

What he said. I've had a Westco battery in my '03 K1200RS for several years now with great results. Just charge it good first like with any battery.

I wondered about charging it. I called Westco and they said the battery comes fully charged.
