well, i am about to take the great leap foward... awaiting arrival of a 97 r1100rs later this week, will share riding time with my /7. have a couple general questions like does it have a chip, it has a remus exhaust , but looks like it still has the cat, and can i lose it or do i need a new system that comes without it? also would appreciate hearing about people's experiences and things to watch or mods they made and recommend . thanks

Those bikes don't need anything except for maybe aftermarket shocks when the stock ones die, and decent tires. The R1100RS still has the best seat of any Beemer I ever owned, and required less maintenance than darn near every bike I've had. I put 88,000 miles on mine, and its still out in northern California somewhere with well over 100K on the clock.
Watch for leaky front master cylinders and head gaskets, but that's about it. Adding the fuel filler neck off an R1100RT will give you an extra 0.7 gal of gas, and 300 miles/tank.
