Just replaced the ABS unit on our R1100R after the dealer checked it out and said it was dead. I believe the code was #7. The unit we put on is a used unit that came off a working R1100RT, I cannot verify that just what the seller said.
Anyway, Bled the brakes and reset the fault using the brown/blue center wire and the system fails when turning the key to the on position before starting. Code # 8 is what I'm reading. That code wasn't there before, didn't have the wheels off. Checked the front gap and that's fine, the rear will be tomorrow. But what I wanted to know, does the ABS computer need to be cleared by the dealer? I remember reading somewhere that needs to be done if you swap used units. Is this true, and is code # 8 sensor out of range a common issue with that?
Thanks,

It is my understanding that the unit needs to be "re-flashed" or some such term by the dealer - so that it is programmed specifically for the model of motorcycle that it is installed on. In this case - coming from an RT to an R it would need to be reprogrammed by the dealer. Consult him or her.

Yup, 8 is 'wrong coding.' Simple fix using the GT1.

Anton,
I have a list showing # 8 to be a wheel speed sensor out of range. Not saying it's correct, but thats what I was going by when I checked it last night.
Is GT1 the factory tool for testing the ABS systems?
Paul / Anton,
Thanks for confirming, my wife (it's her bike) had thoughts of another bad ABS controller.

Not only wheel speed.
Yes, the GT1 is the BMW computer. I've recoded several of these on GT1 and I'm pretty sure it shows an 8.

Thanks for the information. She called the dealer today, and they said pretty much the same thing. $70 and she will be recoded and ready for the season.
It was funny last night when I couldn't get it to reset, she was really starting to get PO. It took me over an hour to remember about the recoding, that why I wanted to pass it by you guys first. She was ready to fire me, so what does a GT1 cost these days? Just wondering, if it's like anything else I've had I would guess $3-5K.
Thanks again,
J

Just wondering if this could be fixed with GS-911?

I heard that either the latest rev has the ability or they are working on it. But the GS911 still (AFAIK) doesn't talk to the 3-wire systems.

I had replaced the ABS modulator on my 94 R1100RS with a salvaged unit that I found on ebay. The seller said it came off a R1100GS. I installed it myself and bled the brakes. Then I rode the bike to my local dealer, Nick's BMW in Depere, WI. The service manager "initialized" the ABS modulator to my bike, and everything has worked fine for the last two years.
But, the ABS modulator did nto come from a R1100GS, but from a K1100RS. No big deal as it was the same style modulator. But any ABS modulator has to be indentified to the bike it is mounted onto so the computer uses the right algorithyms for the dynamics of the bike, wieght, wheelbase, tire sizes, center of gravity, etc.
