A friend has an LT and is only getting 10,000 miles out of his rear Metzeler tire. He asked me to find out what you, MOA members who ride LT's are experiencing and what tire you recommend. I realize this is like asking what type oil to use. But I told him I'd ask and pass on your thoughts to him. So if you could give your preference along with experience with different tires, he and I would appreciate it.

Ray,
I have an 03 k1200lt and have a set of Metz 880s' on them. They aren't necessarily my favorite tire, but the new Avon's (my favorites) have had reports of tread separation - I can't chance that. As a matter of fact, my last Avon front did that - fortunately I caught it as it was starting....
I liked the Avons because I *felt* they stuck better to the road, so I was more confident/comfortable on wet or dry surfaces.
I never got more than 9k out of the rear Avon - I don't consider myself aggressive either and rode solo.
My LT came with Metzs and one time I had the rear end scoot out a bit on a damp/road - I blamed the tire, but it was probably rider error.
I have read reports of folks getting upwards of 12-13k on the rear Metzs, but there are so many variables.
I would suggest maybe your friend also head over to bmwlt.com - you'll get a variety of opinions there.

Thanks for the info, I will pass it on to him. I run avons and have never had a problem and get better wear out of them on my R1200CL. And you are right they do seem to grip better than the Metzelers. But if there is a problem with them on the LT he should know
