looking for guidance on how to add to the electrical system without killing myself or the bike..
My K1100 LT repair and service manual doesn't provide me the answer(s).
thanks

Dual Star heated grip kit is a no brainer - tap into the existing harness. Piaas, I used the Eastern Beaver relay kit - easy.
Both jobs can be done in an afternoon even by an electrical dunce like me.
Usual disclaimers.

The wiring harness is set up with a dedicated plug set for the heated grips and the OEM grip kit and a manual make it real easy if more expensive than the Dual Star, you also need to be sure you have the bars with the correct ends for the wires to come out for OEM grip kits if that year did not come 'stock' with them (My RS did not).

Why even use an Eastern Beaver relay kit, the PIAA kits come complete? At least, the 1100X kit I bought had relay, power switch, wiring harness, etc. All that needed to be done was run two wires to the battery for power, and another to a switched power source, run wires to the lights, and the switch. The most difficult part was running the wiring harness to the lights and switch, and that wasn't too bad (but does require removing the gas tank or at least sliding it out of the way).

I wired in my 'non-PIAA' lights using Beaver Jim's kit, as my cheap-o lights did not come with a relay kit.
See, I told you I'm an electrical dunce.:wave

My Motolights came with a quality relay set-up, but a buddy bought some cheaper lights which came with nothing other than the lights. I would only say that for sure you don't want to run those lights through the harness without a relay. The Eastern Beaver kit, which I added later to my bike, was put on to increase the headlight brightness and try and preserve the handlebar switch by taking the strain off of it. Having replaced it once, I thought the dual benefits of easing up the strain on the headlight wiring and getting a long life out of the new switch were worth the effort.
I can tell you that the quality of the Eastern Beaver stuff was very high - I used the "plug in" harness - there is a more wired in option if you want to go with it. I also have a modulator and it works fine with the modulator in place.
