Doing some maintenance on my 86 K100RT. It has factory installed heated hand grips. They are not working. I found a broken wire on one side, resoldered it and it works fine. The other side I am trying to track the continuity of the wiring to find the problem. I am trying to remove what is called the impact pad. (Where the auxilliary rocker switches are located along with the ignition. Clymers manual only says to trace back the wiring harnesses to gain some slack to pull the impact pad up far enough to work on the underside of it. It seems like the only thing I would have to do is remove the ignition switch from the pad and there would be enough slack in the other wires to turn it upside down to check the switches. Isn't there a way to remove the ignition switch from the pad without going through a lot of work.
I also need a screen for the bottom of the fuel pump as the one on the bike has some holes in it. Also is there aftermarket fuel filters that will work besides the BMW unit.
Thanks all
Paul

I figured out the ignition removal process, was quite easy like I thought it should be. But I still need a source for the screen on the fuel pump and also if other brands of fuel filters will work instead of the BMW,
Thanks

The screen may be difficult. It seems a bit unique. I suspose BMW doesn't list it as a service part? (www.realoem.com would tell you..)

Yup - Pn1: 16121455126 - take that number to your friendly local dealer.
As far as the in-line fuel filter, I've always used BMW filters, but any fuel-injection filter made for a high-pressure system with 3/8" or 6mm hose fittings on it *should* work.

NAPA 3012 inline filter has been good for me. It is all metal, with 5/16 nipples which fit the BMW lines perfectly.

Have you used the NAPA FILTER inside the gas tank like the original. Thanks

I ran a Luber-finer FF3424 fuel filter in a K100LT for 20,000 miles. Cost around $4 and was easier to get in the tank than the OEM. The bike was out of warranty by at least 18 years.
DO NOT use a plastic filter on any fuel injected engine. They could explode.

Yup. It is almost identical. Fits perfectly. I have also used the same filter on fuel injected Jaguars.

Don, isn't that the same strainer basket my 87 K75 would have used? Main problem is getting it installed to the rubber damper. If the damper has been in fuel even once, I'd almost have to say that he'd need a new damper too.

I did find a strainer at Bike Bandit.com for 16.82 plus 5.95 for shipping. The old one seemed to fit the rubber damper OK so I would assume the new one would fit ok, the damper does not seem to be swelled up because of the fuel.
You guys are a great help.

There were two strainers. One for the '85 and one for the '86 and up. Both fit, but the '86 had a nipple for a hose connection. The changeover date was 5/85.

I picked up a NAPA 3012 filter today and am waiting for the strainer from Bike Bandit. While I have the fuel pump out is there anything else I should be doing with it, cleaning, checking pressure etc. I am hoping that after doing the maintenance that some of the whining will go away. I do use Seafoam in the fuel and the outside of the fuel pump looks pretty clean.
Thanks for all of your posts.

Thanks for all of your posts.I would suggest once assembled again that you check the fuel pressure regulator. The pumps are normally quiet unless the fuel filter is plugged, or the fuel-pressure-regulator isn't regulating.
