Unlock by using the ignition key in the lock cylinder which is located directly above the taillight. Turning the key clockwise against the spring will release the rear seat section. With the rear section removed, you can slide the front section back a bit, and remove it.

Saw your other thread regarding battery charging... You don't need to remove the seat in order to charge the battery. I would agree with one of the other posts which recommended getting a charger that accepts one of the plugs that you can plug into your accessory socket on the left side of the bike.
Battery Tender or the Optimate chargers will allow you to do this. It's much easier than having to remove the left side fairing to get to the battery.
I guess you could also install a wire that is permanently attached to the battery with a pig tail that you can plug into as well, but I have always used the accessory socket since it was the easiest thing to do for battery charging.
Enjoy your new-to-you bike!

your bike is a R1100RS, correct? you'll likely get better results by posting in Oilheads section. apparently both previous responders understood what you were looking for, as their answers reflected R bike solutions.
umm, i just reread your post in the oilheads section- and now i'm thinking you DO have a K1100RS... they are prone to popping mirrors, whereas the R bikes are not.
both models were produced in '98, so it would be easy to confuse us with incomplete info. (completing your profile would also help).
so assuming K bike- raise seat, unbolt tab at rear hinge, undo c-clip at front hinge, slide seat off (don't recall if its forward or back, but it is obvious). a few more steps to get the battery out, but they're pretty straight forward.
for the mirror, be sure the 3 metal clips are in place correctly, line them up against the posts, and give a good ker-whack.

Thought I remembered both front and rear pins having the c-clip...For the mirrors, be sure to put a tether on them before you replace them. That way they only drop a few inches when whacked. I used zip ties, but most anything can work. That way, when that big bird hits it on the freeway to freeway connector, you don't loose it outright like my buddy did. Be sure you have the pins lined up right when you whack them, and yes it does take a Good whack.

here's the write-up on making some rad custom trick fancy one-off tethers.... http://www.k11og.org/modifications/K1100_mirrortethers.shtml
iirc, i would just unbolt the seat hinge assy at the base of the seat, leaving entire hinge assy mounted to bike.
except, of course, there's no need to remove the seat simply charge the battery.

You should not need to remove the seat to charge the battery, even if you do not have the type which plugs into your socket.
Simply remove the left side cover. The "Hot" side of the battery should be facing that direction, but make sure. Attach the clip to the terminal, and the grounding clip to any of the number of bolts available on that side of the bike.
I do this with my RS all the time. Takes seconds.
