1) how do I determine the paint code of my bike?
2) Can I get a paint shop to make up some spray cans of the required colour
3) For the DIY effort is it better to go to a paint shop?

I have a dk grey (is it grau?) 93 K LT

thanks

There should be a sticker under the seat of your bike, I believe.

If not, I think Jon Lacko's Beemer Garage site (http://www.beemergarage.com/) has old brochures and can give you the paint code.

You probably will not be able to have a local shop make you aerosol cans, though you might be able to get a match through Dupli-color. http://www.duplicolor.com/index.html

Look for the paint SCHEME tag (black and white approx 1"x2" under your seat behind your toolbox in front of your tail storage).

Look up Paint SCHEME on the chart and find Paint CODE. That number is a Gasurit paint code. BMW used Glasurit brand paint. Glasurit is a subsidiary of BASF.

I'm sure it can be done but you are in for several challenges. Here are some of my experences.

1 I have had custom paint put in rattle cans by main line paint distributers, Dupont, Martain-senor, PPG but it is expensive.

2. Even with the BMW paint number the main lines don't have the formula. The specality companys might have them. I got the dolimite gray from Sandox 15 years ago. Just used the last of the Quart 2 years ago. Not sure what I will do if the bike falls again.

3. The last time I needed a BMW color I went to a Dupont dealer that had a photospectometer with a clean side panel and had it scanned. The bike was repainted so I had no idea what it was. They nailed it. If I get right down on it I can show you which panels are repainted but no one would notice standing by and looking, much less driving by. By the way it turned out to be a Honda car color and had been done by the old BMW of St louis.

4. You didn't say if it was a repair or a repaint. A repaint would be quite a project and require lots of cans. I will use most of a pint of color for an upper fairing and that would be most of 2 16 oz rattle cans. plus primer/sealer and clear coat. On small pieces you paint a lot of air.

5. There are better rattle cans. I use rattle cans for the primer/sealer and primer/fillers just because of easy clean-up. The one that sprays the fan is better then the one that sprays the cone. Dupli-color, Napa and Martin-Senor use the good one.

6. It can be done, good luck Harold in Kansas
