On my K75S I have my final drive and swing arm off with the drive shaft exposed.

There is some kind of clip holding it on. How do I get the drive shaft off??

I removed it. I looked on ibmwr.org tech pages.. You clamp a vise grip on the end and tap it out.

Ouch!!

If you inserted the ViceGrips[tm] into the splines to grab it - please do yourself a favor and check the splines for distortion. If you spot any - you'll hae to find a very fine file and work the distortion out.

I'm surprised that method is still listed on the IBMWR site. The preferred method now is - put 1 or 2 hose clamps around the end of the driveshaft (where it sticks out of the swingarm housing) and gently pry it out using large screwdrivers against the end of the housing - with pieces of wood to prevent dinging the housing.

BTW - since you have it out - once you lube it with Honda Moly60 you can forget about it for the life of the bike. AFAIK - no one has ever had a problem with the transmission end splines.. the universal joint is near it to take out any angular wear, plus this spline is fixed in place and doesn't slide like the rear drive one does.

To reinstall it - line it up on the splines. Put a block of wood against the end - and tap it gently with a rubber mallet. It should go back into place with a click.

Best,

Calbmw said my splines were worn to 50% 12,000 miles ago, and wanted me to replace my final drive for $800. They said it wasn't worth it to rebuild it, because their labor would come close to that.

This Friday I am going up to the motherland and visiting Kitchener, Ontario were my wife is from and coincidentally Bruno. (www.brunos.us) The guy that rebuilds spines and driveshafts to rockwell 59 hardness and adds a grease collar to the drive shaft all for $350 USD.

I think airport security is going to go thru my suitcase to check out the big hunk of metal.

I have used the services of Bruno's for my 87k100rs. The final drive, drive shaft splines and universal joints were replaced/repaired. The man's work is incredible. I visited his shop as he is an hour west of Toronto and was very impressed with his work and his skills. You will not be disappointed!
