My rear brake master cylinder has a drip on the boot, so it needs attention. The local independent shop does alot of K bike work, so I could just take it there but I would like to do it myself unless warned not to. Is tere anything really tricky to know about the the process? I am a but worried about the warning in the Clymer, something about the ABS system needs to be done at the dealer. The '93 is the older ABS I think. :ear KC

Hi,
I have replaced rear master cylinders on both my '95 K1100LT (ABSII) and '94 K75A/3 (ABSI). I did nothing special except to try to keep air out of the ABS system (fill the new m/c before attaching fluid lines, etc.). It worked and I had no further problems with the brake system of either bike. The K1100LT was the one on which I hit the deer a year and a half ago; I'm still riding the K75A/3.

Sounds like you'd like to rebuild your MC rather then buy and install a new one. That's dooable, but exercise the same cautions as with any master cylinder. As for the ABS, you'll want to bleed the rear brakes both at the ABS modulator and at the caliper - in that order. Use the new master cylinder as a pump to push new fluid in and the air out. Don't use a vacuum bleeder to suck the brake fluid through.

You got 15 years out of the original. Treat your bike to a new master cylinder!
FWIW, I've always pulled brake fluid thru the bleed screw on my bikes, using either a MityVac or Snap-On Vacula. No issues.
