Progressive, for their part, is going to review the recording of the conversation I had with their rep back in May, but here is the crux of the biscuit:

1) Moved to Las Vegas from Arkansas in May. Registered bike 5/31, the same day I called Progressive to change address. Progressive rep said I could just let my current policy expire (8/25 exp. date).

2) Progressive issues new ID card with old policy number, new Vegas address.

3) 8/25 old policy expires, new one written. No lapse in coverage.

4) December 10, receive certified letter from Nev. DMV stating that my registration was being suspended because insurance as of 5/31 was not from a "Nevada registered carrier." They want $250 to reinstate, despite no lapse in coverage, and having accepted my original insurance at time of registration.

5) Conference call with Progressive, Nev. DMV droid fruitless. Waiting to hear from Progressive supervisor regarding what they told me back in May. Remember, I have card with new address and old, Arkansas policy number.

I'll update when I hear from rep Friday.

Not that I can see. But I have not had to use either insurance or health care for a while. Hope it stays that way. Have had great service from our DMV, but always a struggle with the tax people. Hope it works to your favor.

Nevada is really strict about insurance requirements.

When I got my fifth Airhead, I found out Progressive allows their computer to make business decisions, and would allow only 4 bikes on a policy. To their credit, after much complaining, cajoling, and saying no, they did offer to transfer the discounts from the one policy to the other.

But now, I have gotten a "no insurance" error from Progressive, as NV DMV kicked it back fo bike 5. I went to DMV, and they said no insurance was showing for the bike. They claimed it was because of some short vs long first name nonsense. When I showed them the letter from Progressive, I asked how it was possible Progressive had a policy/VIN/name match, as shown on the letter, but they could not. They had even sent the notice to the right carrier. No explanation. Computers make decisions there, as well.

Now awaiting yell letter from NVDMV....

Reminds me of that movie "Maximum Overdrive" where the character yells to the machine "But we MADE you!!" - to no avail of course

Progressive insured my airhead for 25 years. Then two years ago suddenly I need an appraisal to get coverage?? It was the same bike they insured before. I was a little well you know.

Progressive also charged me less money to insure 3 bikes than 2. I stopped arguing and just paid the bill.

Progressive almost doubled my insurance rate after insuring all those years. An agent friend said to cancel the policy and then re-apply. Magically the rates went back to what they were before.

Hope I never have to use Progressive for a claim. They are a little confused in my opinion. :scratch

If you hope to never have to use them you really need to get another insurance agency. The reason you have insurance is that eventually you figure you will need to use them in a bad situation. If you don't have any confidence in them you really need to get someone else to "cover your back".

Progressive came though! They've "taken care" of the fine and all should be well. I admit I didn't have much faith in an insurance company to do the right thing, but in this case, they did.

Consider this a warning about Nevada motorcycle insurance!

:violinThey did the same thing to me when I moved from KS to AR--renewed for a year, then just CANCELLED because I didn't have an AR policy, although they were notified of the move and had billed me twice at that location. Premium for AR was ridiculous, so I went with another company--although I was able to obtain a new policy b/4 it went to DMV. Gotta shop around every year!

I had Progressive for several years on three differant bikes. About three years ago my rate nearly doubled. No accidents, claims or tickets. I went on line and checked Progressive's rates as if I was a new customer. They quoated me half of what they currently wanted. I think the independent Agent I had at the time was the one who jacked up the rates. I dropped that agent and Progressive and ended up getting a better deal with State Farm.
