So since I bought my bike back in '02, I've gone back and forth about getting the smallest of the BMW winscreens, the little blue FLYSCREEN. Of those on the forum that are pro-winscreen in general, I've seen a lot of negative comments regarding the flyscreen vs. the larger or aftermarket offerings.

But of those of you that have it, compared to having nothing at all, which I've done for the last 52,000 miles, does it do any good functionally? Or does it induce so much buffeting that NOTHING would be preferable?

Your input is appreciated.

FYI, I'm about 5'8" and am looking for just a little wind protection in the cold.

Thanks!

Had 3 1150 R's at the same time...one with flyscreen, one Cee Bailey 20" and one stock screen. I got to A-B-C all of them in one round of seasons

The flyscreen takes a bit of wind off you and for me was great in the summer months..I am 6'1"ish. It looks sportier if that is important,but, for all around comfort from rain/cold/flying critters and such, the BMW larger one was way better. I had some buffeting with the flyscreen, but wasn't a killer. I have a 1100S that has a short screen so it is OK for me.
Helen has the Cee Bailey bike and is happy year round...it also has the rubber edging lip that sheds rain before rolling over the top.

Other opinions may vary...

I'm running the large Aeroflow screen and love the wind protection and noise reduction as well. I may look a bit old and dorky but 59 years I do appreciate comfort!

I have the small fly screen on my "R" and it does a great job of keeping wind off my mid-section. However, I live in Louisiana, and (until the snow yesterday) cold isn't a big concern. I tried the Cee Bailey 20" screen but got a lot of buffeting around my helmet that drove me nuts in only a couple of miles. So I went back to the fly screen and have been happy. The fly screen looks best too (in my humble opinion).

My bike had a Givi flyscreen when I got it and I rode it from TX to KY-1350k which was enough for me-all about looking cool and nothing for the rider! I put on the Cee Bailey -same as BMW touring model (same brackets) and @ 5' 8" I'm happy with it. I have had to Locktite the main bolts going to the bike as they loosen from road vibration.

I have a pristine 2005 R1150R with the factory "Fly Screen" and I really like it. Of all the motorcycles I've ever owned it is the first that actually came with a windshield or "fairing" and it seems to me to be almost totally unobtrusive.

On the plus side:

It is nearly invisible to a bystander;

It blocks a little breeze but not enough to interfere with the sensation of [I]motorcycling[I];

The engine and almost all all interesting mechanical bits are still visible;

On the negative side:

It still is a windshield and "shields" one from the wind;

It is difficult to claean on the inside after a rainy, muddy ride:

It probably reduces gas mileage.

Yes, I really like the flyscreen (I am 5' 10").

Mine came with the sport screen and it was horrible. I had a nasty buffeting at anything over than 65-70 mph. I also tried the bike without anything and didn't like it, either. I had to cling to the bike to stay on at faster speeds.

The flyscreen (for me) is just tall enough to get the wind off my chest but still leaves my helmet in clean air. Very comfortable, even after 400+ miles/day.

Thanks for your input everyone. I'm glad to hear that there are some folks out there the DO like the flyscreen. If I end up getting anything at all, that'll be the one.

Guys and gals:

I have a 97 R850R with a Parabellum fairing screen on it.Looks kinda dated but it works good.Two bikes a go I had a 2006 Triumph tiger,the buffeting on that would about knock you off the bike at times.Tried MRO Vario,no screen at all,and a custom one I made.Never did solve it before selling it but I have heard the Cee Baileys are pretty good.

Hey Kennett-

I'ld been riding my 650 CS with a short sheild all summer.

I purchased my '04 R1150R in July '08. She was naked and
I could definitely feel the wind on the larger machine as I began to get
comfortable on a 520 pound beauty.

Vince Winkel helped me in some decision making, :dunno as we ride
identical bikes. You probably read that he road over 8 thousand miles
this fall on his 1150R, and so he knows all about exposure, and highways
travel.

Vince uses a tinted Sport Sheild, which is the shorter stock windscreen, and
we've exchanged a great deal of info on wanting, and needing a larger wind screen.

I purchased my OEM Highway Windscreen from A&S cycles, and it came
with full mounting hardware for about $210 +/_.
Conveniently, I had to have an oil change done by my mechanic the same
week it arrived, so he slapped it on there for me.

From the get go, I could tell the difference in wind blockage, and less
resistance in my arms and chest.
I truely began to enjoy my summer rides, and this also saved a little on gas, and saved lot of energy on the part of the rider, as there is less force of the wind on your carriage, due to no more 'battering' of wind on your chest.

I'm also 5'8", 170 lbs, and ride with a full face helmet. I have enjoyed the protection cold air, flying insects, flying objects, and the sting of the rain.

You won't be disapointed if you go with the larger size windscreen. I was
very impressed with the design of the sheild, the hardware, instructions, and packaging.

Hope this helps you keep the bugs out of your way!:dance
